I've added a couple hundred more cards to my vocab deck from the Core 4000. I'm up to step 3 there. I was expecting there to be lots of new words but I would say about 1/3 aren't new. A few more are stuff I've seen but never really learned and some of it of course is brand new. When I started in on the core 3000 series I think more words were never seen before. I will say a lot it is stuff I was getting from anime and manga.
Anyway, I am putting off adding new words form sources like manga / anime. I think I will still add words from my JOI classes - there aren't too many new words given per class and it seems a waste not too. But I now have a goal in mind of finishing the Core 6k as soon as possible. I'm now viewing it as similar to RTK 1 a couple years ago. It's a basic step I need to fight through before moving on and it's not really as hard as it seemed. I think.. I wonder how fast I can finish it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

And now I'm in a bad mood. I got an email that the Kanji in Context book from White Rabbit Japan just shipped. Almost two weeks after I ordered them. Several days after I'd emailed them about how I was disappointed about missing the new version of the books by a few days and they said there was nothing they could do. The stupid things hadn't even shipped. grr.

JP Books in London have KIC: http://shop.jpbooks.co.uk/search.php? search_query=kanji+in+context&orderby=position&orderway=desc Not sure how that would work out for you though. KIC from whiterabbit would be $39 plus $23 tracked shipping for me. That's ~£38 so it's about the same (for me) as walking into JP Books and buying it directly. Amazon (UK) list the reference book for ~£38. Maybe I should consider stocking up on the kanzen master series and buy them all in one go - maybe that would save on shipping? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

If you're thinking of bulk buying expensive textbooks Amazon JP or Honto are worth

Thanks for the alternatives. I'll keep them in mind the next time I buy Japanese stuff. I might just get over it and go back to White Rabbit though.
I just rediscovered KanjiDamage. I think over the summer or something I found it and thought it was cool but also wanted to review RTK and so sort of mixed it into my RTK deck. Then after a couple weeks I just stopped. The sounds I learned for that time stuck for a while then faded. I'm redoing a new deck. I'm going to forgo RTK entirely from it and focus entirely on the sounds. I'm basically just cutting and pasting from his site into a spreadsheet for my SRS deck. Without the drawing component the reviews will go faster and knowing the sounds would be so helpful. I already do know lots of sounds so doing this should be way easier than if I attempted it a couple years ago. I'm really making SRS a big part of my learning right now. I've got it for grammar, vocab, and now the kanji. Anyway, I added the 1st 50 cards to my KanjiDamage deck from his site and I'm going to add 50 more.. Here's how it looks... SIDE 1: 火 (in a big font) SIDE 2: fire "Onyomi KA as in : 'my CAR caught on fire the other day. (FYI : It was a Pinto. ) ' A person on fire, surrounded by 2 sparks. Kunyomi ひ flame SIDE 3: ★★★★★" "Jukugo 火曜日かようび Tuesday ★★★★★ KUN ON 火 (fire) + 曜日 (day of week) = 火曜日 (Tuesday) 火事かじ fire ★★★☆☆ 火 (fire) + 事 (action/ incident) = 火事 (fire) A fire - not like the fire in your stepdad's crackpipe; like the fire that spreads from his crackpipe and engulfs your whole trailer. 花火はなび I'm testing for knowing the meaning of the kanji (which is really easy for me) and then the Chinese sounds. The other stuff is just to look at if I'm curious. He includes it on his site so adding it is really easy. It would be neat if I could blow through this as fast as RTK since it uses mnemonics. I keep wondering if it's better to watch anime w/o subs. If you understand w/o subs then I can see how it's better sort of. If you understand w/o subs then you probably don't tune out the Japanese anyway however which is the argument for not using subs. So in theory you focus more on the Japanese if there's no subs I guess. But what if you're not good enough to follow the story? If there's no understanding how can you be learning? I can't convince myself it's better and I end up getting really interested in the anime I watch so I don't want to not understand.
What I could do is make myself rewatch anime I guess. Obviously if you've already seen it then you can't use the excuse that you don't understand. But this is kind of boring. I always want to watch something new. (yes, I know some people watch the same movies over and over and read the same books over and over but I rarely do.) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

When you say with subs, you mean with English subs or with Japanese ones?
Recently I have experimented with watching dramas just with Japanese subs and I have had great results. Thanks to the subs I was able to understand quite a bit because the kanji help a lot when it comes to that. I did noticed that I started to rely too much on the Japanese subs and when turning them off I still had a lot of trouble understanding as I was heavy relying on them. I have been watching a few episodes without subs and my listening seems to be improving. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
