That sucks about your DVDs. I hope you can get your money back. :(
I remember when I first reached the point where simple sentences in anime began to make sense.... it's exciting! Sadly it takes forever to get the longer sentences to follow. I'm still working on that myself. In anime I've noticed there seems to really only be two kinds of dialogue: short, easy sentences and exclamations, and very lengthy complex plot exposition. I love Hikaru No Go. I have the first two manga volumes in japanese, and I want to use them for studying japanese.

I stumbled upon the heisig method for kanji. It's gotten my interest and I'm devoting a lot time to it. Breaking
the kanji down into manageable pieces makes a lot of sense. This guy claims he learned all the 2000 or so standard kanji in a month before starting his formal Japanese studying. Don't know how true that is. It does seem possible but really impressive nevertheless. I don't think I could do it personally. But I'm very curious to seeing how far it goes. I've also taken to practicing writing kanji on my hand with my finger while studying. Since I wasn't taking much time out to go sit down with a pencil I think this should also help. So I'm optimistic. Right now i'm learning to draw all the kanji along with their meanings. I'm not bothering with the pronunciations at the moment. Kraemder, if you're considering using Heisig, are you familiar with the this site: Reviewing the Kanji? It's a great community of dedicated learners, most of whom use the method. That's not all they talk about, of course; they discuss virtually everything under the sun when it comes to studying Japan and Japanese.

I didn't know about that site. Thanks for the link it looks like a great site. So far so good with this method - I'm remembering how to draw new kanji a lot easier than before. It's only been a few days though so I'll need a few weeks to really know if it's much more effective or not. It seems so logically good though. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Just to make sure you know ...
There's a ton of Anime on hulu.com you can watch with Japanese language and English subs without paying and there are quite a few asian-based "drama" pages that will link you to various Japanese shows such as www.dramacrazy.net/ www.mysoju.com/ and others (actually I lost my favorite link when I wiped my computer, but there's a ton of similar types of sites). Things like Hulu and Netflix give plenty of Japanese content that are fully legal and the other types of links are moderately legal as well ... Kraemder, I tried Heisig for a while (and will probably go back to it). I think it's definitely good to use even if you
end up not sticking with it. After the first 500 or so Kanji you really start to develop a feel for the radicals and the stroke order, and learning new kanji even without the Heisig method gets easier. I will warn you though that it can be hard to keep going when you start having huge numbers of reviews every day, and skipping a few days results in a huge backlog of work, even worse than Anki in my experience. However, plenty of people slog through that just fine, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, just be prepared. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yeah trying to learn 2000 of anything is hard. I haven't done it with vocabulary yet (at least formally using
flash cards, it depends on how many cognates I haven't seen I guess). So I expect it to takes a while although I'll probably be impatient anyway. I'm aware of Hulu. It's a life saver. I got stated on hikaru no go by picking a random DVD at the store and they didn't have -any- of the discs after the first one. I just went on Hulu and made it a hikaru marathon weekend. I hate the ads though so I avoid hulu when I can. I did a Rosetta stone tutor session yesterday. It was a lot of fun. I got a young attractive woman this time which is always a plus (although I'm happy with any native speaker). It was a lot easier for me than the first session. I hope to record my next one so I an compare it to the 1st one to gauge my progress. I like how Rosetta stone sets up the sessions so that if your language stinks you can still have a 2 way learning session without English. 1 person has voted this message useful |
