Got through my 600+ Core 6k due, watched anime, and did two Japanese Skype lessons tonight. Although I
am skipping the RTK and grammar deck in Anki, not too shabby.

600+ reviews is good going for a day. How much time are you spending in Anki?

I'm finding it tough to do more than 20 minutes in a single stretch. Partly because I'm doing more reading (and I'd rather put the
time into that, to be honest) so something has to give, but also partly I just don't want to spend so much time in Anki. Weirdly, I've
no problem spending 30 minutes vocab or sentence mining from a textbook :-)

What are you doing to avoid burn-out?

I'm just not burning out. I think I'm convinced that getting the 6k done is the best thing for my Japanese right
now. Kind of like people doing RTK can get really focused on finishing it, that's how I am right now. I am
doing some other stuff still like watching anime mostly but also a little reading. The vocabulary I learn in 6k is
always the most useful when I go speak Japanese. Reading or understanding anime it's useful too but mining
those anime for vocabulary also gets good words but for speaking Japanese and doing JLPT workbooks, the
6k is really worth it.

My teacher left me feedback on the trial lesson..

お疲れ様でした!こちらこそとても楽しかっ たです。ポールさんのレベルはもう日常会話 には問題ないレベルになっていると思います 。この調子で頑張ればもっと高いレベルに行 けるはずです。

I think he's right. So the next level is having an intelligent conversation I guess lol. Even in English though, I generally just have everyday style conversations. It's when I'm writing stuff down that I put more thought into what I say. The better you can express yourself though I think the better you'll be able to passively understand too - IE anime.

Maybe I missed something (which wouldn't be the first time!) but isn't he saying you already have no problems with day-to-day conversation? Then he's
saying that if you continue like this you'll reach a very high level.

All sounds good to me! Congrats!

Hehe maybe I missed something too if you did. I was very happy with that feedback.

I read that the license to freely use the material developed by iKnow (IE Core 6k) expired and now it's going
underground or via their website. Kind of a sad day for Japanese learners. I still have my deck though
thankfully XD. I've been doing pretty well with it. I have 693 unseen cards right now. I tend to get greedy
and add new cards 150 at a time. It's been a few days since I've done that however. I took 67 minutes
getting through reviews today but that's in part because I made some changes to the learning options for
this deck. I felt like I was failing cards at 1-2 week intervals because I wasn't getting enough exposure up
front. Just barely remembering it didn't seem to cut it. I currently have the steps in minutes set to .3 6
1440 1440 2880. I had it even more aggressive not long ago and then changed it which reset a lot of
learning cards I think. I've had a ton of reviews the past few days O.o.

In addition to the Core 6k which I've been diligently doing, I dusted off the RTK 2 deck I got off Anki. It's a
really nice one called RTK2_Public. Although it shows you the vocabulary I'm totally using it like a hiragana
or katakana learning deck. Just testing myself on the pronunciations. I sort of know a lot of kanji now so
getting through it should be much easier than a couple years ago when I tried initially and got distracted or
something. I think it was too ambitious then - I wasn't ready to read books/newspapers anyway. Now I'm
very much ready to do that.

I just did a private tutoring session and we read the NHK news together. I have to say I feel like the people at NHK news purposely chose to use the vocabulary from the Core 6k. I hadn't read it in a while and I could see the improvement I've made. Most of the kanji and vocabulary I recognized from 6k. Although I see Core vocab in lots of stuff I do, it never seemed so lopsided before. I wonder if Core is based off the vocab they use in the news more than other vocab.

Anyway, I was very happy with the improvement I saw.
