I'm down to 395 unseen in core 6k. I kinda want to just cram them all into the active so I can sort of say I've
learned the 6k. Tomorrow maybe. I changed anki back the the defaults so it doesn't drill new / forgotten cards
as much as it was. I may turn that back on again but not for a couple weeks I doubt.

I haven't been keeping up on my reviews as I had been doing. I'm still getting some in but not clearing for the
day and it really adds up fast. In part because I'm starting a new job and doing training for that so I'm more
tired I guess and thinking about a lot. I'm going to Virginia Beach for training this Sunday for two weeks. I've
no idea what that'll be like or how much studying I'll get in. Right now my reviews are up to a thousand. Ouch.

I'm on a business trip (for training) in Virginia Beach, VA for two weeks. I'm halfway through the training and
keeping up on the Japanese while at the beach and with friends right close by like a college dormitory has
been challenging and I haven't been up to the challenge. Even today, the weather is cold and rainy and
there's nothing to do since it's Sunday but Japanese seems low on the list. I'll probably get some motivation
later to get some anki reviews in at least. I'm over 1000 due and only did 100 yesterday. I was so close to
getting all of the 6k active at least in the deck but with so many reviews I'm not adding anymore for the time
being. Thankfully a lot of cards are becoming mature so it'll get easier.
I'm on the 8th floor of a hotel overlooking the beach so it doesn't get more georgous than this. It's not raining
and they've been having these beach football games outside by the hotel with referees and everything.
Obviously a league of sorts. Girls playing too - it looks fun. On a down note.. it's black college weekend here
so there's college kids everywhere and also just some young people in general here... several thousand.
Someone got shot in the parking lot 3:14 am. A little scary when I consider I was drunk, walking back to my
room from a nearby bar about an hour before that. I stayed in last night. Most of the party people are going
home today though so it should be back to normal.
This trip got me thinking a bit though. Japanese requires a lot of time and focus. If I get much of a social life
ever then good luck moving forward.

I'm back from my trip to Virginia Beach. It was a nice break from my life in Tucson although I was doing it
for work I just took a class and the material was easy enough I didn't have to study outside of class.
However, there were plenty of distractions and then I got sick the 2nd week so basically I didn't study
Japanese. I'm home and looking to get back into the routine again. I don't even know what my overdue
really is in Anki - it says 1000+. My cold is a bit better - I no longer have to take cold medicine to function
during the day just at night when the symptoms get worse again. Going through the reviews I'm noticing
(again) that I'm really dependent on the Kanji in understanding a word. Which makes sense since the deck
is setup only to read kanji. Even with the million overdue I've gone ahead and added sister cards testing
me with kana on side one and the sentence audio to give it some context as needed. I hope this helps and
it was something I meant to do anyway after I'd gotten through all the Core testing via kanji only. I think it's
time however.
Having taken the break from my normal routine it's weird - the trip broke my obsession with Japanese so I
don't feel any urgency at all in making improvement I'm sort of going through the motions and expecting it
to come back as I get caught up.

Sorta getting back into studying. I was really proud of myself that I got through 500 reviews today in two
hours. I had the daily max at 1000. I just increased the max to 2000 so I could better see how far behind I
really was.. After all this work I have 1452 due cards. Wow. I almost had 2000 due today. I'm impressed.
I signed up for an accounting summer class. If I want to get more promotions at work they want me to take
these 'core' business classes. Truly a pain and I'm sure this will reduce my time to study Japanese. I'll
probably have to take accounting 2 also after this one in the 2nd half of the summer. Oh the joy.

Last weekend I discovered a new program, well new to me, called Kanjitomo. It's basically Rikaisama with
OCR. Well it didn't have all the features of Rikaisama but it looks the word up on the dictionary and it
generally works very well. I'm using it to read raw mangas online. I'm hooked. These are really fun and the
mangas are fun to read too. They aren't generally very hard either so I'm not getting tired out. It helps to find
a manga with better scan quality. More for me than the OCR though. It's a little insulting that this program
can better read a shoddy scanned kanji than I can but oh well. There seems to be an infinite amount of
reading material now and I plan on reading the manga that goes with the anime do I'll better learn vocab.

Yeah, I'm crazy busy with work, but I'm basically hanging in there with the Japanese. The thing about me and programs and pop up dictionaries is that I find everything for Japanese, but for FInnish the options are all much less. I have yet to really find a decent pop up dictionary for Finnish. I just have to do it with copy/paste.

Hi Cathryn. Yeah I am pretty impressed with the language learning resources available for Japanese. Especially when I took a detour and studied Korean last fall. I was thinking iFinger might have a pop up dictionary for Finnish since it's a Norwegian company and all but I'm not seeing one. Weird. They have all the other European languages and Finnish seems close geographically to them and all. Copy and paste isn't so bad though.
