You got me to cave in and check out Korean too :) I was watching NHK Education and a
Korean language episode came on. Of course it was moving from Korean to Japanese and vice versa, but it was really basic so I was able to follow it. It struck me how relevant it is to the Japanese language. And then I read your log and decided to just give it a go. So glad I did! I don't think it will hurt your Japanese, and a new language is a breath of fresh air. I'll follow your example and keep it slow too. Good luck with both, seems you are advancing with Japanese. Sometimes reading Japanese becomes a game of figuring out where the words start and finish. Usually I get
it.. this one sentence I'm trying to translate though is a bit confusing. And it's for a grade so it's important.. can't just get the gist and move on. In case you're curious here's the sentence: 私が行ったお寺は大きい門のある新しい静か なお寺で、二人の大工さんが、このお寺を建 てるの に二年しかかからなかったそうです。 The underlined part is what's giving me trouble. Is the の a nominalizer? And に is just a postposition to connect it to the time duration and predicate? *edit to provide my answer* The temple that I went to was a quiet new temple that had large gates, and I heard that two carpenters only took two years building the temple. I'm not happy with it because I'm not accounting for the の that comes after 門. Anyway. My Japanese semester is ending so we're getting a lot of work to pass in and I have the JLPT 4 coming up. I haven't looked at Korean much heh. All the due dates got me back on track with Japanese.. But I know I"ll be picking the Korean up again I'm too curious. I finished off the two assignments given to us last class. There's an extra credit we'll get and another "kanji
quiz" which is more of a translation exercise that's take home. I'm pretty sure the rest of the class barely started the two assignments I just did. They were a pain in the butt. But I wanted them done... I have the jlpt coming up and don't really want any assignments hanging over my head. I'm way behind on my spaced repetition deck which stinks but I know all the vocab we'll need for class. Almost. There's a couple words that snuck in it seems while I wasn't looking. Some verbs for the transitive and intransitive pairs that we're doing now. Just a couple though. It would be nice I think if the Japanese dictionaries I used had the transitive or intransitive equivalent when you looked it up. None. You can find it usually if you look at other words using the kanji but it'd still be nice. While I'm at it I guess I'd like for the dictionaries to double as thesaureses. Just reading the stuff to bring for this JLPT language test... they're super strict. I'm taking the level 4 of the test. It won't qualify me for anything as it will certify that I am an advanced beginner and is for fun only. But they take this super seriously. It's my responsibility to bring pencils. Usually those are provided (hey I'm paying afterall and what if I forget mine?). They can't be mechanical pencils though. Who uses wooden pencils anymore? Apparently I will. I am to bring -several- sharpened pencils. I don't think I'm allowed to bring a sharpener? Maybe they don't want the mess? Weird. There is NO CLOCK in the room. The test is timed. I am to bring my own clock. I cannot use my cell phone as a clock. I can see that since it's a device I could possibly use to cheat with if they're not watching I guess. I can't bring a digital watch though. WHAT? It must be analog. It must not beep. Crap. I will have to buy a stupid watch just for this test. Sucks. And pencils.
I'm not to bring any printed material with me. I don't get that. Why? Can't I just put it in a bag under my seat? No electronic devices at all - a cell phone is allowed if it is fully turned off and in a bag under my seat. No food or drink except for water in a bottle that has no writing and it cannot be on my desk during the test but must be under the seat in a bag. I guess I'll be leaving my stuff in the hotel. Including my iPad etc. Which makes me slightly nervous since it will be the cheapest hotel I can find. Wow. Wow. And wow again. Are they paranoid or what? And they can't provide pencils? That's... I don't have words. Good luck on the test though.

I'm finally getting around to doing the practice test for N4. Yeah I didn't really get into this whole test thing. Mostly because I felt that the N4 wouldn't be very hard for me and well passing it isn't quite the achievement for me that an N3 would have been. If I'd gone for the N3 I know I would have studied a lot more between September and now. Although with class and work finding the time would be hard but still, I would have. No anime - maybe less exercise heh. Maybe it's better I didn't go for N3.
Anyway, I just did the 1st section. I got 71%. I'm not sure what passing is. It was basically a vocabulary check. This section is actually split into several parts and I actually did really well until the last part which really got me. It was testing vocabulary that I mostly didn't know. Frustrating because I knew all the vocabulary for the example sentences... except the word being tested. They're not super advanced words but I just didn't know them. わる and るす and にがい. Actually I now the last one. Well we've used it in class but I just couldn't remember it as I took this test. I knew I should know it too. This last part they didn't give kanji to help you. It would have made it a lot easier for me since I would probably have guessed the meaning of the word just off of the kanji. Anyway, I'm gonna get lunch and do some more of this practice test. Thanks =). I'm starting to get excited about it. Would have been nice if I were excited about it a couple months ago when pushing myself to study more would have helped lol. I know, when I saw the exam rules for the first time before sitting N3 in the summer I found them a lot more intimidating than the test content. It's a lot stricter than any exam I've sat for a British institution. For that reason alone I'm really glad I went for N3 before taking a long shot at N2, so that at least as the test content gets harder I'm not also going to be caught out by unfamiliarity with the exam procedure. Actually the only thing that really did catch me out on the day was that I was a bit paranoid about ending up needing the toilet halfway through the exam, so I didn't eat or drink enough in the break between the first and second papers. Towards the end of the second paper I started getting really hungry and was kind of distracted by my rumbly tummy!
Good luck with your N4, although by the sounds of things I think you'll do just fine. Once you've got a basic familiarity with the format of the test, I think general language knowledge is far more important than exam practice, so I think leaving the boring stuff until the week before the exam is actually not a bad strategy at all! I did too much too early for the N3, and I felt totally bored by Japanese study by the day of the exam. Although I don't think I've done enough yet to pass the N2, at least I don't feel like I deserve it yet...but I'll show up next weekend and try my best anyway! I know your frustration from lack of kanji as well. For me, the problem is not so much about not having a clue to the meaning, it's just that some words I've never really seen written in hiragana, so when they crop up with no kanji on a test paper or something like that it just takes me so much longer to recognise the word (I'm just not used to it being "spelled" that way I guess). 1 person has voted this message useful |
