Science>>.

On my influences on the way to polyglotism
I've written about methodology a lot here at HTLAL, and I've also written about my
progress and my experiences in learning languages, travel, and personal development.
But here I would like to dedicate a post to the people who inspired my methods and my
views and who continue to serve as role models for my current... ascent to
hyperpolyglot state? I think? I don't know if I am a hyperpolyglot. Anyway.
The strongest role models come from people that share similar values and lifestyles to
my own. Some of them adopt methodologies that often run perpendicular to my own, but
most of the basic values and ideas are shared between me and the role model, and that
is why I choose to emulate part (but not all) of their method. So when I say that
person X serves as great inspiration, this does not mean that I just copy mindlessly
what they do - more that you can see a strand of their philosophy echoed in my own,
even when I am my own person and diverge from their path all the time.
It is not surprising then (and I've mentioned it before) but the two biggest polyglot
influences on me are Iversen and Benny Lewis. Keep in mind this is not a judgement of
who is the most skilled polyglot (I've heard and seen most polyglots in reality and am
aware who is technically more skilled most of the time; I do not want this to turn
into a debate of BENNY DIDN'T REACH C1 MANDARIN - it's not about that).
The reason is that both their approaches and interests resonate much more with my own
than any of the other polyglots in the community, except maybe for Olly Richards. I
respect all the others but in terms of methodology and mentality they are far less
influential to my lifestyle.
Iversen and Benny Lewis in one sentence may seem like a contradictio in terminis,
given that Iversen leads a much more sedentary lifestyle, but here is how this breaks
down: Iversen's approach to grammar is more analytical and thorough and proper than
anything I have ever seen from anyone else. If you want to know how to learn grammar,
just read what Iversen has wrote on it - it's the exact same mentality that I use when
approaching grammar. It's fantastic. Iversen's thoughts on culture and travel and
science I also quite often share, and it's fantastic to see a log that doesn't just
use English. I remember meeting Iversen, and to me he is the fantastical old
grandfather of languages. You just do not argue with Iversen :D
Benny Lewis is the other big inspiration for me personally, and this is because his
travel lifestyle and goals to a large extent reflect my own goals and needs. I know
what he feels like when he travels, because I've experienced the same things and I
know how frustrating not being able to say something is when you live abroad. I see so
many expats that struggle with the culture and making friends and I know I did and
since I've turned that around it's made travel so much more rewarding for me. The only
difference is that I prepare beforehand more than he does, especially with regards to
his earlier missions (he changed). I also know what kind of methodology he uses to
improve his more advanced languages and I do the same things (not in the least because
we share the same French teacher, hah!).
Furthermore I like his emphasis on understanding the human beings and culture.
Language is a vehicle and I only use structural analysis as a means to be able to
integrate better during my travels, although I'm getting very good at grammarese. When
people ask me "why don't you study linguistics" I answer that that's theory and I
study languages to use them in this real world where I talk to actual people (although
I have studied Latin and found it very enriching).
So I want to say thanks to those people who provide the examples for me to pull
through when I lose motivation. I'm not as eagle-eyed as Iversen is, nor do I have
Benny's business acumen, but those things that I can emulate to make myself a better
language learner, and more importantly, a better traveller and person I will take.
(Plus it helps that Benny is an engineer, which is similar to my own - so we share a
same methodological and scientific view which really helps to understand and produce
patterns).
Using this method, I was able to communicate in Finnish after a few weeks with my
teacher wondering how I could say so much when I'd studied my... phrasebook... for a
few hours. The method I'm using works for me now.
The really big problems I am facing now are: maintaining the shitload of languages I
have, and how to get to that elusive C2 level.

Great post, Tarvos! I enjoyed reading it. I hope you know that you, and others on HTLAL, have been an inspiration to me. It's motivating to see that people can and do learn multiple languages. For me, it's like a beginning runner watching elite racers for the first time. I've also learned a lot from reading the different approaches polyglots have taken. The linguistic experiments you have conducted on yourselves make one reflect on one's own learning style and how best to absorb and use new language skills. So thank YOU Tarvos and the rest of you for making my language journey easier and lots more fun.

Il Piccolo Principe
Finalmente ho scritto un testo sopra il piccolo principe nel Lang-8. Non era tanto
male. Bene, possiate leggerlo qui. (In Italiano, perché ho letto il libro in
italiano).
@Clarity: Thanks for the kind words. I find it kind of hard to believe my writings on
a small corner of the internet influence somebody, but it's good to see someone's
reading my log. As well as people reading my blog, which I find even funnier whenever
I see hits from Vietnam or, even stranger, the United Arab Emirates... despite me not
knowing Arabic or Vietnamese.

I've been dicking around again on the internet, and rediscovered the Speakasap courses
(and have been using the youtube videos to teach me some Czech). So I got inspired and
booked a half an hour session of Czech on iTalki (what? it's $4? I can afford that!) just
to see how far I get. It's Czech, and even a cursory glance gives me the impression that
it's some kind of really screwed up variant of Russian, and that it should be possible to
adapt to Czech rather quickly, given I get the hang of the pronunciation and the
vocabulary (the grammar seems to be Russian with a few minor differences, like the
negative clitic being tacked onto the verb itself instead of written separately).
I'm also working on my Russian and Greek, and doing a bit of everything else on the side.
I'm mostly working on my Greek though, and I am getting better at speaking it.
