Yesterday I hit a bit of a wall. I worked a bit in the morning, but I just couldn't stomach it in the evening. I ended
up watching 3 episodes of Law & Order back to back instead. I think a goal of 75 hours (doing purely self-study)
was a bit ambitious for August! I can still make it - but it will be tricky.

Total for yesterday: 112 minutes

talk to someone: 65 minutes
- Skype session

listen to something: nope

read something: nope

write something: 30 minutes
- practice makes perfect (Honestly, the irregular verbs are exhausting me!)

practice vocabulary: 16 minutes
- anki

Today was much better than yesterday! Even though I didn't talk to anyone on Skype, I easily put in three hours
(spread throughout the day in 20-40 minute blocks). No frustration, no boredom - if anything I had to stop
myself, because I figured the 3 hours was enough for today.

I am LOVING the intensive reading of Despereaux. I read a chapter 5 times today, and I'm still surprised that I
find it so interesting to re-read the same text multiple times.
first read: general understanding - there were lots of hard words in this chapter
second read: look up words/expressions, add most useful ones to anki
third read: re-read for understanding (since there was lots of new vocab that I didn't quite catch on the first read,
and the second read was constantly interrupted to look up words)
fourth read: recording myself
fifth read: reading along with my recording

I still haven't received Harry Potter in the mail yet. I'm looking forward to adding in more extensive reading to
complement the intensive reading. I'm thinking that I'll keep doing a chapter of Despereaux intensively most days
(20-40 minutes, depending on the chapter), and then read Harry Potter for pleasure for 15 or 20 minutes in the
evening. I love that I can actually READ in Spanish!

total for today: 180 minutes

talk to someone: nope
(although I am reading aloud during my intensive reading)

listen to something: 25 minutes
- Destinos episode 28

read something: 48 minutes
- Despereaux (intensive reading)

write something: 53 minutes
- practice makes perfect verbs - more irregular verbs today. Still hard!
- practice makes perfect pronouns

practice vocabulary: 54 minutes
- anki
- duolingo

I spent some time today doing the following diagnostic test from cervantes, for a new Skype teacher that I'll be
working with:

http://ave.cervantes.es/prueba_nivel/default.htm

It put me at a level B2.3 - B2.4. I'm very pleased with that result, since I expected to be somewhere around a high
A2 or a low B1. That said, I do have decent test-taking strategies. I've spent the past few years preparing
students for French tests, so I'm well-versed in the process of elimination in multiple choice questions. But still,
I'm really happy with my progress. It makes my goal - C1 by summertime - seem a little more realistic! I
struggled with the listening part of the test - I'll definitely need to work in more native materials soon.

Total for today (day 23 of six-week challenge): 202 minutes

Talk to someone: no, not today. I do a ton of self-talk throughout the day - both in my head and out loud - but I
don't log that.

Listen to something: 92 minutes
- Destinos episode 29
- Notes in Spanish: 4 intermediate podcasts
- Youtube playlist

Read something: 33 minutes
- Despereaux (intensive reading)

Write something: 61 minutes
- practice makes perfect verbs
- practice test (although some of this was reading, and some was listening)

practice vocabulary: 16 minutes
- anki

It seems that you've been working really hard and it's paying off. Congratulations!

Today marks the three-month point of learning Spanish! I've made another entry in my video learning log:

video learning log - month 3

It's far (FAR!) from perfect, but I'm happy with my progress! I feel that I'm able to express myself a little bit more
comfortably every week.

Lots and lots of speaking today. Too much, almost! I'm not even going to touch my book tonight.

day 23 of six-week challenge: 185 minutes

talk to someone: 155 minutes
- 2.5 hours of Spanish over Skype + a very short video (the learning log video that I linked to in my last message)

listen to something: 20 minutes
- Notes in Spanish: 2 intermediate podcasts

read something: nope

write something: nope

practice vocabulary: 10 minutes
- anki

I'm currently at 60.4 hours for the month of August, which means that I need to log at least 172 minutes every
day if I want to hit my goal of 75 hours for the month. I'm pretty sure I can make it!

Looks like you're doing very well! I'm sure that you'll be speaking quite well by the time you get to Spain!

Are your Skype partners from Spain? I've noticed that there is a huge difference between the Spanish of Latin America and the Spanish of Spain.
