I am in agreement. I watched 5 seasons of Un Village Français on Netflix.fr while in Belgium this summer,
with French subtitles for the deaf(and not word-for-word of what was said), and I felt like I had quite a jump in
my listening skills.

The best thing then is to get rid of the subtitles totally :-)
It feels scary at first, so starting with something already known may be a good idea, but
it is a great relief in the end.

Komma

Welcome Komma and good luck!

Buffy

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will pursue with using the series I have as I'm happy with that. Yeah, I
think it appears that I don't necessarily 'need' Buffy as I have plenty to keep me occupied. I'm not
ready/wanting to just yet tho to get rid of all subtitles as I've barely got much use out of reading them in
French and I'm quite enjoying it as a new learning activity that's like reading with translated audio in the
background- It's motivating and sth different, so Cavesa I'm a little ways off ditching them altogether yet, but
tnx anyway :) Once i'm tired of it or even feel I know an episode well enough I will try with French audio as
well, or French audio only.

Thanks again peoples (pronounced 'pee-opp-lees' I think you'll find)

PS Where you at Jeffers? Hope you're ok mate

I remembered having a few of these as a kid for just kinding of learning general knowledge
miscellany and there they were in the French bookstore! I bought a pack for ages 12 and 11
and they have been great.

I find these a very relaxing/enjoyable way to feel like I am working on my French. They
include little questions on history, spelling and grammar, geography, arts, etc. and the
anwser on the next card.

Voila!

Peter, I'm sure you'll do fine whichever way you find the best :-) one of the things I love abou ditching subtitles
is having much smaller trouble finding something to watch. I am now experiencin the trouble again with my
boyfriend who needs English subtitles to the movies, that is the only way to avoid Czech dubbing or subtitles
with him now. And it is hard to find what we want :-)

Plumbem, thanks for the tip. I find school textbooks for native kids and teenagers to be awesome studytools
but they are usually hard to come by. Even the libraries don't have them often.

I'm okay PM, thanks for asking. I've been snowed under with work and things, and then I couldn't get on HTLAL this week (explained a bit more on my log). I had posted on here at the beginning of March, but it looks like the old dinosaur that is HTLAL dropped a load of posts.

Jeffers - so glad to see you posting again!

All - I think we agreed to do an output challenge for March (I think the posts disappeared while the forum was
down), and I failed miserably. In reading some peoples logs, it seems like motivation has been low of late.
How about something fun for April? Maybe learning the words to a song -- and/or cooking a Francophone
dish?? Thoughts for an April challenge!

PM, t'as une PM.

Cavesa , est-ce que tu es complètement comfortable sans sous-titres? Même pour les séries et les comédies dont le langage est le plus familier? Comment s'est produite cette transition?
