Svenska Akademiens ordlista över svenska språket (SAOL) contains 125 000 words, and even in the first paragraph of Hemsöborna is a word thats not in it: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/30078/30078-h/30078-h.htm There are a few words in that paragraph that are related to boats that I don't know the exact meaning of. But it might be true that it is not a totally fair comparison since Swedish has a lot of compound words. But I am pretty sure that if we look around we will find writers with a bigger written wocabulary than Shakespeare and personally I believe that Strindberg is one of them. Oh, and in any decent Strindberg collection there is a explanation of unusual words and cultural references. Most swedes do consider Strindberg as a hard read.

FR: J'ai promis d'écrire quelque chose sur "Science et Vie", juillet 2014, et maintenant il est temps de le faire.
Selon la couverture du magazine l'article sur les cauchemars serait le plus important, mais je ne trouve pas que cet article m'apprend beaucoup de choses nouvelles, et l'importante distinction entre cauchemars ordinaires et les soi-disant "terreurs noctuels" (expression traduite par moi) sont sinon ignorés, du moins bien cachés sous quelques références aux phases du sommeil où l'on peut avoir des cauchemars. D'autre part, l'article mentionne une possibilité intéressante de combattre les cauchemars - à savoir: prendre le contrôle avec éléments négatifs comme on peut le faire dans les rêves lucides. Mais comment appendre à faire ses rêves partiellement lucides? C'est pas facile. Peut-être le problème sera résolu par une pillule avant qu'on l'apprenne. Mais il y d'autre articles ici.Par exemple des aficionados de los dinosaurios pourraient ne pas savoir qu'on a trouvé une site avec plusieurs sauropodes encores plus massives que le célèbre Argentinosaurus pres de Trelew en Argentine. Et de plus: la fonte des glaciers et des plateformes de glace de l'Antarctique occidentale est maintenant devenue irreversible, selon une étude dirigée par Eric Rignoet sous l'égide du Jet Propulsion Lab de la NASA. La hausse du niveau de la mer effectuée par la fonte des glaces de cette région à elle seule pourrait atteindre quelque 120 cm vers la fin du siècle. Et une plante Rinorea niccolifera de Luçon aux Philippines peut apparemment bouffer le métal toxique nickel. Bon appétit. I had made some additions to my Guide to Learning Languages part IV (the one about vocabulary learning) to reflect the changes in my repetition techniques and the results I have got from my experiments with Serbian dictionaries.
Besides I have added Serbian to the workcount table in this thread from Nov.3 2013 - using two lines, of which no. 1 represents my results immediately after a wordlist training session with a specific letter and the other the results using pages from the other end of the alphabet. My pilgrimage towards Ш is still going on - I was temporarily derailed by my recent visit to Québec and Northern N.B. and then by spending time on organizing my photos and writing a travelogue - but now I'm just about ready to take on the last part few letters in the azbuka. I know - the picture disappeared with the old homepage of my travel club, where I had stored some pictures. And in this thread I long ago linked to a dozen or so of my paintings with language themes. I can probably find (or reconstruct) the pictures again on my PC, but then I have to choose a NEW place to store them and correct the links - and I have simply not have time for that yet. For picture no. 2 I could luckily use the one in the Wikia.

Or in English: I made wordlists and one repetition round for 4 letters О, П, Р and C (O, P, R and S) in July, but only had time for round 2 of O before my trip to Canada. In Québec I had only brought the papers with S along, so I could do a second repetition round for this one, not the others. Today I did a final control round for all four letters, and the most puzzling thing about this round is that the missing round for П and Р hasn't had larger impact on the retention rates - and there is hardly any loss since the first repetition. But for the two 'big' letters (with many words) P and S the percentage of forgotten words is higher than with earlier letters (27% in round 1, 28% now 4 weeks or so later), and I know why: I tried do them in one evening each and that has clearly had consequences in the form of lower retention rates. A few days have passed sine my last update in this thread, but that doesn't mean that I haven't studied. I reached the end of the Serbian alphabet yesterday at the word list level. I don't know the total number of words used before this evening, when I do the first repetition round (of two, maybe three), but it has already passed the 5000 words treshold. I listened to Serbian and Croatian television yeterday, and the mist is now slowly disappearing - sometimes I understand several sentences, but then my understanding breaks down on an unexpected word or form. While I have worked with the dictionary based wordlist project I have had to cut down on the intensive text studies, but not to the point of complete neglect. I have recently studied one text from Wikipedia about the Cambrian epoch and another about trilobites (the domina nt life form during the Cambrian), and I have prepared texts about some of the Medieval Serbian and Croatian kings (my knowledge about the latter is considerably higher because of a series on the History Channel, which they had repeated again and again instead of serving up a similar series about the Serbian kings - and there are definitely also other regnal series which might be interesting to study).
I have also spent less time on other languages, but since my last message here I have read texts about graptolites and mass extinctions in Italian and parts of the guidebook to the National Museum of Taiwan in Spanish, and I have used a number of languages as reference languages in my bilingual printouts - like Afrikaans, Esperanto and Portuguese. And the translations of the articles about Serbian & Croatian monarchs are in Romanian because it seems logical to use another Balkan language for precisely those texts. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

DA: Jeg er just kommet tilbage fra Århus centrum, og på vejen frem og tilbage nåede jeg at afslutte min spansksprogede guidebog til Taiwan's Nationalmuseum. Mere herom i den spanske smøre nedenfor. Men det bør måske nævnes at Århus har startet sin festuge just i denne weekend - og som sædvanligt falder den sammen med Horsens Middelalderfestival. Jeg har i mange år prioriteret middelalderen frem for den århusianske blanding af finkultur og druk, og det der med den store andel af deltagere i middealdertøj har noget med sagen at gøre. Horsens' festival har simpelthen 'atmosfære', mens min egen hjembys festuge har tabt den smule atmosfære som den havde i starten og er degenereret til et krampagtigt forsøg på at udmønte nogle intetsigende overskrifter i praksis. Hvilket blandt andet sker ved at lukke nogle af byens hovedfærdselsårer i ugevis.
SP: El Museo Nacional en Taipeh contiene entre otras cosas un montón de objetos de la Ciudad Prohibida en Beijing, pero con los años se ha ampliado a través otras colecciones más pequeñas. Se encuentra en Taipeh en Taiwán porque Chiang Kai Check trajo las collecciones aqui después la victoria total de Mao en el continente, però la acción fue posible porque las collecciones ya estaban empacadas - se las movió alrededor del pais desde los años trinta para evitar primero los japoneses, y mas tarde las fuerzas armadas de Mao. Y el museo es muy bueno salvo en un solo punto que, sin embargo, está importantísimo: la prohibición absoluta de fotografíar o filmar, que aqui pare ser el principal interés de la gestión en lugar de las experiencias de los visitantes. He visto señales de prohibición en otros lugares, pero aquí los guardias están equipados con grandes posters monstruosos como en las demostraciones politicas del calle, siempre y solamente con advertencias para no fotografiar. Como consecuencia, funcionan casi como una manifestación de manía del poder y de desconfianza de los visitantes. Además no hay muchas postales para la venta, e incluso si hubiera postales, que probablemente mostrarían objetos individuales en lugar de las colecciones y salas del museo. Quizá el personal piensa que esto es trivial porque ellos estan allí cada dia y pueden ver todo quando quieren, pero para nosotros los visitantes las fotografias personales ayudan a mantener viva la memoria del lugar. La guía es bien escribida en su genero, y los objetos mostrados son interesantes y talvez de una perfección tecnica increíble, peró almeno yo vé el libro como un inventario con comentarios más que un guía a un tal museo específico. Y porque los objetos presentados son aislados del contexto y representan unicamente el nivel mas elevado de perfección, este libro sería insoportable se yo no sabía ya un montón de cosas sobre la civilización china y yá habia visitado la Ciudad Prohibida. Sin la imagen de los pabellones imperiales a Beijing en mi cabeza el guía sería tan aburrido como el directorio de una fábrica de porcelana. En el museo hay una pared con una producción vivificado de la vida en una ciudad china, compuesta por elementos de pinturas auténticas. No es casualidad que esta pared es algo de lo que me pareció más interesante en el museo, en lugar de un jarrón más de la porcelana. Pero la pared no se menciona para nada en la guía.
