We have recently discussed language mixing and interlanguages. I use the connections between related languages extensively when learning new languges, but Fasulye has declared that she prefer to treat any language in isolation, one language at a time. On that background it is not surprising that I'm the one who writes in languages and dialects that I by any standard don't know.

EN: Yes, Iversen is explaining the method behind this phenomenon of people writing in languages they have never studied. Therefore it's logical that I cannot do this, but this is OK for me. For my personal development as a polyglot I do not need this ability. I am not a beginner of language learning, as I have learning experiences with 12 languages, and I have been studying languages intensively sinds 1992, so this is already a period of 17 years. I have always been a sequential learner and I have learned all 12 languages as seperate entities, so there is no reason not to continue like this. It's interesting for me to know, how other learners like Iversen for example, proceed differently, but of course my own way of proceeding will remain as it is. My limit to polyglottery is my lifelong weak memory and not the learning methods I use. According to Prof. Arguelles it's not even possible to become multilingual for people who - like me - cannot travel to foreign countries.

I can't understand how fasulye can learn 12 languages as separate entities at all!! For me, there are many connections, which form the part of the entirety: to separate this parts it would feel disjointed, and I would disinterest in it. What I find beautiful, are the continua and how all the things connect: if you study all the languages as separate ones, where's this nice cohesion?

I didn't know that Prof A. told it's not even possible to become multilingual for peple who cannot travel to foreign countries. he's absoluely wrong. I've the diploma which is necessary for study in a Dutch university in Dutch, but I was only one day in Holland. My German's not bad I think, but I was one day in Cologne and other day in the new car of my father when he wanted test it very fast on the highway where it's not a limit of km threfore we drove in Germany. We drove nearby Düsseldorf but we didn't park. You can watch TV, podcasts, DVDs, read books, internet, have penpals, etc..

(Zitat Jar-Ptitsa)

AF: Jar-Ptitsa wens ons all om iets te skryf in afrikaans, so laat my gee my deel. .. ’n Enorme teleurstelling. Nou weet ek hoe voel ’n OP-rugbyondersteuner. En dan was daar iewers in die 1990’s nog ’n komeet, ek dink die naam was Hyakutako of so iets. wat ek vir my dogtertjie, toe sowat drie of vier jaar oud, wou wys."

--------

I have searched for interesting things in Afrikaans by limiting Google to that language and giving it a couple of words to search for, - it's a proven method, but this time it didn't yield anything really exciting. Then I got an idea: as I have mentioned earlier I have one issue of the South African travel magazine "Weg" ('Away') in my possession, and of course it has a homepage. So I have been reading some travelogues there, including one about a man who sets out in the wilderness to look at a comet named "NcNaught" (maybe Fasulye has heard about it, - I haven't). And apparently he saw it. Good for him, because he failed to spot Kohoutek, Halley was as big a deception as a rugby match involving a team called "OP" (I presume) which apparently isn't the world's best ... and then there was one called Hyakutako or something like that, whose name he barely can remember. But all that he and his dog could see was something blurred in the horizon. Bad luck.

I still prefer the paper version of that magazine, but it is good to have something more to read than my one single issue from 2007.
