Go for it! It may seem fascinating on the surface, but you have no idea how truly fascinating a language it is until you get into it. People say it's extremely hard, but I think the difficulty of Chinese is definitely overstated. The characters are the one particularly tricky part, and even they are only a minor obstacle with the right learning methods. The beauty of the characters does provide a lot of motivation to learn them. The complex ones become easier once you get used to the component parts, and there are plenty of easy ones like:
