A minor quibble...
The book states that there is a MYTH (my caps) about poliglots that they speak all their languages equally well. Has anyone out there actually heard of such a myth? Surely anyone and everyone can work out for themselves that the more languages you learn, the less well you'll know some of them. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I wouldn't necessarily call it a myth, but as soon as people around me (friends, colleagues etc.) learn that I have studied a couple of languages, they somehow think that I can interpret and translate back-and-forth effortlessly. Same thing with music - if you know how to play more than one instrument, you're almost supposed to be able to use all of them in all genres.

Yeah, there's no such myth. Unfortunately the author seems to make up a few myths through the book just for dramatic effect or as a device to introduce a contrasting idea.

Actually Alkantre has made 3 videos about this book, one in English, another in Spanish and a third in a number of languages (and this last one he refers to a video by some mysterious Dane).
And Steve Kaufmann ('Lingosteve') has also made a video about it. Erard certainly can't complain about the reception of his book! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

As a translator, being forced to precisely comprehend every nuance and convey the meaning of a foreign text into your native language (for a monolingual speaker) rather than just "understanding" the text in the foreign language can be a very humbling experience for any language learner, especially when faced with texts that you would not normally read or have access to as a non-translator.
