As I go deeper into my French studies, I've decided to start this log so I can get feedback from th huge HTLAL community.
My first contact with French was back in 2002. I did the old Teach Yourself French in a Portuguese edition. That allowed me to join classes at uni directly at the 3rd semester. After classes were disbanded in 2005, the only contact I had through French was using it to learn other languages, mostly from Assimil books. I did learn a lot from them. This year I decided to resume learning French actively. I went to Paris in February and could make myself understood most often, even though I'm still bad at listening. So far I've accomplished these books: Assimil Le Nouveau Français Sans Peine Assimil Using French Now I'm taking Assimil Business French, at the expenses of using other equally good or better books, like Streetwise French, Living Language Advanced French and French for Marketing (the subject I've studied at uni most often). I plan to write more often in French than in English, so, anyone is free to correct my mistakes. I think that foruming/chatting was the activity improved my English drastically (yes, it used to be worse =D) and if I can do this for French I'm sure I'll manage to have a working knowledge of this language. ====================== So, this is a log for discussing my activities at Assimil Business French and my contact with the language overall. Je m'ai bien amusé dans ma première leçon du Français des Affaires d'Assimil. Les dialogues sont très vivants, il y a plusieurs caractères. Ce n'est pas du tout ennuyant, comme quelquefois dans les leçons des méthodes 'sans peine'.
J'ai trouvé un problème: les leçons sont un peu longues. Je dois encore au même jour étudier chinois et géorgien, et je crains que je n'aurais pas assez du temps pour étudier le géorgien si je demeure plus d'une demi-heure dans la leçon de français. Eh bien, aujourd'hui était juste le premier jour. Je vais passer à la leçon de géorgien et à partir de demain je vais analyser s'il vaut la peine que je fasses une leçon intégrale chaque jour ou s'il serais mieux de diviser la leçon pendant deux ou trois jours. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Je n'ai pu passer aux exercices du premier chapitre qu'aujourd'hui. Maintenant je dois répondre des question sur le dialogue, comme un examen d'interpretation de texte, mais je ne me souviens de presque rien qui a été parlé au dialogue! So, here goes my tip: once you're done listening to the dialogue, proceed directly to the exercises. You can even let the tape continue so you can listen to the questions, then pause and write down each answer. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Il faut que j'achète Français d'Affaires peut-être, car maintenant je suis en train d'améliorer mon français pour atteindre quelques buts! Je suivrai ce journal avec assez d'interêt pour en savoir comment les achèver!

Deuxième leçon. Les dialogues sont toujours longs mais assez intéressants. Ils sont plus faciles à comprendre que ceux du livre Using French, parce que le langage et beaucoup plus usuelle. Il n'y a pas de divagations sur la littérature et sur le régions de France.
I'm not saying literature or regionalisms are not interesting, it's just that, being long, those dialogues represent a REAL conversation in full, with a start, a development and an end. As I listened to this dialogue, I could imagine myself back to Bouvelard Saint-Michel, trying to hear what people said at the next table so I could figure out some French. I could understand quite a bit from the dialogues, I think it will improve with time. I'll avoid looking at the text as I listen to the dialogue for the first time, even though that will represent extra time and I'm in a hurry for finishing those lessons during the afternoons. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

My listening comprehension is finally improving! Since the dialogues are so context-oriented, I'm understanding more and more as I listen to the dialogues.
Aujourd'hui je suis très heureux de réussir à comprendre un peu mieux le français parlé! J'espère que ma compréhension s'améliore pendant ce livre-cours de français. 1 person has voted this message useful |
