GER: Sehr gut! Ich mag auch Wörter zu listen. Ich werde übrigens heute Abend die Beschreibung der Methode auf http://learnanylanguage.wikia.com verbessern.
Ich habe leider versäumt Harald Lesch auf ZDF gestern zu sehen, aber dann gibt's ja glücklicherweise das Mediathek auf http://www.zdf.de, wo man seinen Vortrag jederzeits wieder sehen kann, und er wird dazu noch einen Vortrag 10/5 um 19..30 halten. Seine alte Vorträge auf BR alpha sind auch noch zugänglich und ich kann sie nur empfehlen. DU: Ik heb moeten leveren Routledge "Comprehensive Dutch grammar" terug naar de bibliotheek, maar in plaats daarvan heb ik het nu besteld thuis via het internet. Het was erg onderhoudend en interessante lezing. Het verbaast me bijvoorbeeld, dat niet alleen constructies met "noch .. noch .." mogelijk zijn, maar ook alleen met de laatste van de twee noch'er. IT: Il mio lettura di autobus-al-ritorno-del-lavoro di oggi è stata "Turisti per caso", una revista che ho comprato in Italia a solo un euro. È como il diario di viaggio di "Syusy e Patrizio", una vecchia coppia che apparentemente ha divertito i telespettatori di Raiuno dal suo primo giorno. ---- Professor Harald Leesch has changed from BR Alpha to ZDF (German TV stations), but his old lectures are still accessible through the internet, and it seems that also ZDF make it possible to see some of his new programs. My bus-back-home-from-work reading is currently an Italian travel magazine "Turisti per caso", which looks like the diary of an elderly couple "Syusy & Patrizio". And Jar-Ptitsa is still visible. MIJN NIEUWE BAAN
NL: Ik zal maar even kort inlichten over mijn nieuwe baan. Zo zal ik eerst drie dagen algemene scholing krijgen, daarna nog projectscholing. Ik heb een positieve eerste indruk gekregen vandaag. Een heel belangrijk verschil zal zijn dat ik in mijn arbeidscontract nu een absoluut verbod van elk privégebruik van het internet heb staan, daaraan zal ik me ook strict houden. Zodoende zal niemand mij meer tijdens werktijd in het forum ontmoeten. Op mijn oude werkplek trok zich er niemand wat van aan. Dus als ik nu in het forum ben, betekent dat dat mijn werkdag nu beeindigd is en dat ik al thuis ben. Engelstalige grammatica's zou je in Duitse openbare biblioteken niet te vinden krijgen. Romans of kinderboeken in vreemde talen kun je daar wel aantreffen. Voor zo'n Engelstalige grammatica zou je in Duitsland al naar een universiteitsbibliotheek moeten gaan. At least a shorter travel leaves more time to spend at home on the internet, which you need now that you can't do it during your daytime.
In Deense bibliotheken zijn er eigenlijk veele Engels boeken, met inbegrip van leerboeken en grammatica's. Je kunt ook enkele Duitse en Zweedse / Noorse boeken vinden, maar andere talen worden grotendeels net door fictie vertegenwoordigd. ICE: Ég teljaði í gær ekki bara svensk, en einnig íslensk orð. Fyrir þetta hef ég notað tvær orðabækur: Islenzk-Dönsk Orðabók (Ísafoldarprentsmiðjan, Águst Sigurðsson) og hín framúrstakanda Íslensk-Ensk Orðabók Ídunnar (Svavar Gudmundsson et al.). Þvi miður hafa þær engin upplýsingar um tölu orðanna, og af því hef ég reiknað út prosentina af þekktu orð út af öll yfirlestu orð. Útreikningarnir segja þetta: með Sigurdssoni öðladist 10.300 orð = 53% (af um það bil 21.000), með orðabók Iðunnar 10.800 = 48% (af 22.300). Nú er 22.300 mjög litið, - af hverju hef ég þa segið að hún er svo goð? Af því að hún hefir margar orðatíltækur og að málfrædingingir upplýsingarnir eru mjög goðir.
Tvítyngdur textur eru ekki auðveldur að finnast fyrir islenskum, en eg hef núna funnið utvég: á heimasiðunum www.lexilogos.com/bible_multilingue.htm er gangvirki sem kan sameina tvo eða trjá textar frá bíbliunu, - eg hefur kjosið 2. konungbók, sem er ganska orðhvöt: "Og konungur sendi aftur til hans annan fimmtíumannforingja og fimmtú menn hans með honum. Fór hann upp og sagði við hann: "Þú guðsmaður, svo segir konungur: Kom sem skjótast ofan!". En Elía svaraði og sagði við þá: "Sé ég guðsmaður, þá falli eldur af himni og eyði þér og þínum fimmtíu mönnum." Féll a eldur Guðs af himni og eyddi honum og mönnum hans fimmtíu." Aumingjar hínir fimmtíu mennir! Það er ekki auðvelt að léva við spámennum. --------- Yesterday I made a Swedish wordcount, but later also one for Icelandic, using two dictionaries: an Icelandic-Danish from 'Ísafoldarprentsmiðjan' (the Isaland-print'forge') and an Icelandic-English one from Idunn (named after an old Norse goddess who fed the gods apples to keep them young). None of them carried information on the number of words therein, so I had to calculate the usual percentage of known words against all words considered. I got 10.300 with the first and 10.800 words with the second, respectively 53% (of approx.21.000 words) and 48% (out of 22.300). Small dictionaries you may say, but I still find that the Idunn thing in particular is every Icelandic crown worth, because it has excellent grammatical annotations and a lot of expressions. In my opinion this is more important than a few words more or less. In contrast my Danish-Icelandic dictionary from 'Mál & Menning' contains 46.000 lexemes and a lot of idiomatic expressions, but only annotations for the Danish words because it is written for Icelanders and not for Danes. I have also found a way to get bilingual texts for Icelandic (which normally is a problem): my preferred keyboard page Lexilogos also has a subsite where you can pick two or tree languages and make your own bilingual Bible edition. I have done this with the section of 2. Kings, where Ahaziah sends one army unit of 50 men after the other out to the prophet Eliah, who duly lets 2 x 51 men consume by fire from above because their commanders are insolent to him. It may be the bible and the language may be oldfashioned, but it's a bilingual text, and it is quite entertaining. I have also made bilingual texts with Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, English, Tagalog and Latin now I was at it... so if you thou catchest me speaking in a weird and anachronistic way then thou knowest whither it came. Iversen, I am getting a bit tired of so many word counts.... That's more exciting for mathematical people, who love to calculate everything from early in the morning until late in the evening. When I'm confronted with too many calculations, my mind just switches off. And I must stay fit, because my professional training seminars are demanding anyway. This evening I rather enjoyed reading Tobyrne's characterisation of polyglots....

You certainly shouldn't try to memorize those word counts. I do them for my own sake as a project because they give me the opportunity to compare my level in different languages right now (and I still haven't done them in Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Platt, English, Danish and Russian so your tribulations will unfortunately continue for a while).
However I still have other activities. I have already mentioned my evening with the Mediathek of ZDF (including more than an hour with prof. Lesch), and I have been listening to a whole series of podcasts about the Byzantine emperors here - what a madhouse! Did you know that the Balkan peninsula became Turkish because emperor Heraclios fought the Persans and won - quite unexpectedly for everybody except maybe himself. But then there was a power vacuum, and the Moslem forces moved in almost before Heraclios, ill and worn-out, had returned to Konstantinople. And after that the Arab forces the Turks took over, and as everyone knows they almost conquered Vienna. The problem is that all these podcast with Mr. Lars Brownworth from Long Island were in English, and therefore I have not mentioned them here (before now, of course). I don't consider listening to English an act of active language learning - it's too easy. So there is still hope for my sinful soul, and I will certainly get back to the dinosaurs and black holes and things like that soon... but as I said, I have a project, and it must run its course. Btw. I also enjoyed Torbyrne's description of an exceptionally gifted and exceptionally hardworking polyglot's life. I didn't answer myself in that thread because I already have spent more than 2000 posts on describing ways to avoid using teachers. So it's a whole project of word counts spread over all your languages, I didn't know that. Then it's logical that there will come some more word counts. OK, then I understand the strategy behind it.
