Ok, fellows, little of March is left to complete our song challenge....Not really being familiar with francophone music, I am chosing a piece that I, well, don't intend to sing very often, but have an interest in (or at least I'd like to recognize when I hear it). It is the Belgian national anthem, La Brabançonne.
The link will show you a version sung in all three official languages in Belgium (French, Dutch, German) along with the lyrics, but if I understood Wikipedia right, the French version is the original one. There is also a version combining all three languages in one text. This version is usually sung by the king (as he may not show any preference for any language in Belgium - that would a political nightmare!) Songlines, thanks a lot for this challenge, which made me learn a bit more about my new home. Arekkusu, I liked your proposal of the lang-8 texts very much, and would love to do this later this year. Jeffers, love your idea of a learning-based challenge! I agree this is the perfect preparation for the Super Challenge! I personally, however, will do a lot of non-language-related stuff in April, in order to have more time to read from May onwards. I found a delightful video in French L'homme qui plantait des arbres (The man who planted trees) . It's 30 minutes long and subtitles are available in a lot of languages, so, along with animation, the story is easy to follow and worth following.
I also found the text to L'homme qui plantait les arbres and a letter from the author introducing it. This particular story is perrect for 30 minute study sessions because you can go through the whole story in one sitting. Here is an mp3 of the story. And another mp3 location of L'homme qui plantait les arbres. There is a set of flashcards for the book as well. Would it be alright for me to join this team as an observer? I have just started a French language log, so I know I am a bit late to the party, but I don't want to wait until 2015!
