I don't think anyone's given a great example of the usage.
It feels to me that "ditsy" means either "clumsy," or "forgetful" and that "ditz" means just plain stupid.
Also, my parents say both, but my grandparents never say "ditz."
My friends never use either one.
You could use both, but "ditsy" feels to me like a word that only a grandmother would use.
When my father was talking about a really stupid teacher who talked a lot and didn't seem to be very organized, he called her a "ditz."
My mother used "ditsy" when she was talking about someone who kept forgetting stuff. I can't remember the exact context though.

I disagree.
Clumsy is a clutz, not a ditz. A ditz is an airhead, and a ditzy is someone who behaves like an airhead. Which is not the same thing as being stupid, either.

DITZY! What a 70s word! I love it...
It means (usually) an airhead blonde (not necessarily in hair colour, but in spirit) who isn't too bright and/or seems to live in her own little World.
A ditz is someone who is ditzy (by the way, both terms only apply to women).
A klutz (it's a yiddish word) is just someone who is clumsy.

People keep saying that "ditzy" means "airhead" yet I don't even know what an "airhead" is. Care to explain?
