I think that «Ojalá»/«Oxalá» is one of the few expressions whereby the subordinate
clause takes the subjunctive without the «que» for wishes and demands in the principal clause. But I think that in written registers, especially like in business language and at work, one can actually leave out the «que» in polite demands or wishes, i.e. «Espero reciban Vds. el informe a tiempo», «Espero Os Srs/Sras asistam á reunião». In Portuguese, if I remember correctly, one can use the pretérito mais-que- perfeito of «poder» like «Oxalá», but for wishes that never materialised in the past, viz., «Pudera eu tomasse a ginjinha ontem», «Pudera comprasse esse livro». In the first case, you can't omit "que". Your possibilities are: - Espero que (...) possam assistir à reunião. - Espero que (...) assistam à reunião. In the second case, there's a mix-up of tenses. Your possibilities are: - Pudera eu tomar a ginjinha, fá-lo-ia. (too literary / artificial) => present / future - Pudesse eu ter tomado a ginjinha, tê-lo-ia feito. (idem) => past - Pudera eu comprar esse livro, fá-lo-ia. (ibidem) => present / future - Pudesse eu ter comprado esse livro, tê-lo-ia feito. (ibidem) => past Some more colloquial are: - Quem me dera poder tomar a ginjinha. - Quem me dera ter podido tomar a ginjinha. - Quem me dera poder comprar esse livro - Quem me dera ter podido comprar esse livro. Yes, "ojalá que" is not unheard of here, but much less frequent (although that may depend on region as well) than the non-redundant form -- I failed to mention that can be used as an emphasis marker too, not only as "unnecessary filler" :)
Very few indeed. Subjunctive forms without "que" are also used in imperative constructions for persons other than the 2nd singular, f.e. "venga a nosotros tu Reino", o "partamos cuanto antes".

Hablando con lxs latinoamericanxs oía "ojalá" casi siempre con el "que" mientras que en España no tanto. Aunque al principio me sonaba algo extraño, al final acabé por asimilarlo y ya la mayoría de las veces lo digo sin "que". Ahora las dos formas me suenan normales.
Una cosa a la que creo que nunca me voy a acostumbrar es el uso de "que" en lugar de "de que" en frases como "después que", "luego que". Bueno y ya que estamos, también hay la costumbre de utilizar "escuchar" con el significado de "oír". Antes no tenía ese problema pero de tanto oírlo se me ha pegado y lo quiero emplear para todo: "No te escucho, ¿me puedes escuchar a mí?" 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

Ya nos acercamos a la mitad de este segundo mes del TAC, ¿alguna idea para un segundo reto?
Otra idea: podríamos pedir voluntarixs para traducir el reto de cada mes en todos los idiomas que estudiamos aquí, o sea, el castellano, el catalán, el portugués y, ¿por qué no?, el papiamento también. Lxs traductorxs cambiarían de un mes a otro. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

as for a reading challenge, would you be interested in doing it as a challenge for all TAC'ers? maybe each individual team can come up with something specific. We could also try writing a short story together, where everyone writes a paragraph (maybe with an English translation to help others follow along?), or we could even do it on a sentence level. On a sentence level, we could try to get a hundred sentences in a month or something like that, but with a rule that you can't write two sentences in a row. We could also change it so that there need to be at least two or three other people before you write a new sentence.
