"Ils font de bons amis." They make good friends.

I need a tiny issue cleared up. Why is it de and not des?

My guess is the article drops the s when the adjective takes the plural. If so, does this also apply to adjectives that come after the noun?

Am I even close with my guess?

Yes, de doesn’t take the S when followed by a plural adjective “de bons amis”.
However, it does take the S when followed by a plural noun with a postponed adjective, such as “des chats
noirs”.
