Recently, my friend expressed an interest in learning Mandarin. He asked me about what I thought was the best way to do so from home. I am fairly familiar with the numerous program and tape-based methods, but I am curious if anyone has had experience with online courses. I'm specifically referring to the subscription type of courses that offer ongoing lessons and even 1 on 1 tutoring. Whether you've tried Chinese online courses or something else, I'd like to hear your feedback.

I'm trying ChineseClass101 myself at the minute and I'm enjoying it so far, it seems really good, although you can't just listen to the podcasts if you really want to learn the material. I've tried a variety of others, and whilst I can see benefits in LiveMocha, I gave up when it asked me to read sentences with words it hadn't taught me yet in, and when I realised that it didn't use standard pinyin.

I have a subscription to Popup Chinese. I should mention that it is not my main resource. My learning approach is very free form, in part due to my schedule.

I wholeheartedly and without hesitation recommend ChinesePod as the best language learning platform I've encountered.

I will third ChinesePod. I've been a long-standing member, and they continue to offer some of the best material;
language and grammar at varying levels, and additionally they have podcasts specifically to address grammar
mechanisms (synonyms, constructions, tone, etc) and culture (I miss the Dear Amber series!). I've tried
KoreanClass101 for Korean, and while it's nice--I think that company has stretched to provide more languages to
their subscribers than the Praxis group can, and quality of the podcast as well as the supplementary material has
suffered for it.

I just started playing around with the materials at www.chineselearnonline.com. I periodically change what I'm doing to keep things fresh.
