Hi all,
I'm new here and have a couple of questions: 1) How can I get "diglot" or "triglot" to appear next to my username? 2) So I'm pretty proficient in Russian and currently I'm studying Esperanto. I'm having a hard time maintaining motivation for Esperanto, though, since I'm only studying it to give myself a bridge of sorts into the Romance languages. I'll be studying Hindi next fall in school, but I definitely want a self-study project outside of that. What would you all recommend? What languages are your favorites? The indications under your name are based on the languages you state that you speak. The languages you just study won't count in this respect.
As for the idea about learning Esperanto: there are indeed research results that indicate that you will learn other languages just as fast or faster by first learning Esperanto and then the 'real' target language. But not many trust these reports enough to postpone teaching their kids for instance English, and as far as I know there is no evidence that you get the same effect with later target languages. Learn Esperanto for its own sake and because it doesn't take too many years to reach the level where you can use it. You don't mention Latin, but learning Latin as a gateway to the Romance language would be a very bad idea - it may be interesting to learn Latin once you have learnt a couple of Romance languages, and you may need it if you want to study a Romance at the academical level or if you real like reading about the Romans, but otherwise it will be much more fruitful to learn two or more modern Romance languages.
