How difficult is it to pronounce russian correctly?
Home > Languages > Russian > FAQ > Pronunciation

Russian has a reputation for being a language of raucous consonants with few vowels. It is partly true but I believe that being able to understand and speak in such a guttural language is one of the reasons people want to learn Russian in the first place.

Achieving a pronunciation that will be understantable to Russians is not very hard. Most words tolerate being slightly mispronounced, the context helping to tell which word you meant exactly.

However, getting a perfect pronunciation is quite hard, especially because of the difference between hard and soft consonants. Each consonant can be pronounced hard or soft, which is a bit like if you pronounced it with a "Y" right after. You'll notice immediately the wet "L" in Russian, pronounced with the tongue stuck against the palate. With the proper instructions, this is not too hard to reproduce. But how about the wet "R"?
