Our newscasters here in Romania always congratulate the Italian football coaches for speaking a decent level of Romanian, but most of the time it's just Italian with a few Romanian words thrown in.

Francesco Totti speaks a very basolectal/dialectal Italian: romanesco.
Please don't copy this dialect if you study Italian.
Educated Romans don't sound like this:

he said: se sapevo che rimanesse avrei detto rimane
it should be: se sapessi che rimaneva gli avrei detto rimani!

I live in Munich and a certain French player has his daughter in the same bilingual school as mine daughters. Both are learning German. Players have sufficient time to do so, if they want to, certainly encouraged here.

There are several Americans playing professional football in Germany and most seem to have a decent grasp of German, in relation to how long they have been living in the country. Steve Cherundolo in particular speaks the language very well.

But it appears to be a different story in ice hockey and basketball. This is probably due to the fact that these sports (hockey in particular) depend heavily on imported players and coaching staff. The working language of the squad is often English, whereas the native-English soccer players are in a tiny monority and just have to cope with German.

Recently, there have been a few Scottish footballers trying their luck in European footballing outposts; places like Bulgaria and Turkey, where not much English is spoken away from the tourist beaches. In most cases, the player returnd home after a relatively short stay, citing "inability to settle" and language was often mentioned.

Yet there have been several players moving in the opposite direction who get on with life in the UK depsite having little English at the outset and they rapidly improve their English skills.

I geuninely think English-speaking players make less of an effort overseas with language. Sure, some of them end up pretty fluent but plenty make little headway, even though they are earning big money, have plenty of free time and access to top-class tutors. But how many imported players in the UK can't function in English after 2/3 years? Hardly any....yes there is the steretypical image of a grammar-mangling footballer with his brains located firmly in his feet but for a foreigner to go in front of TV camera and chat coherently off the cuff does actually require a good grounding in a language.
