I first learnt about this "retranslation method" from this book:

"Si quieres, puedes" (Richard Vaughan)

I wrote about the "Direct-Inverse Translation method" a few years ago here:

http://how-
to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13883

I didn't know about the historical origins.

William Camden wrote:

It is an old method indeed, around since at least the 16th century. Roger Ascham, the
tutor of Queen Elizabeth I of England in her youth, used the method, particularly with
translation to and from Latin, but perhaps other languages as well. Elizabeth was an
impressive linguist so the method must have worked for her.

A little time is supposed to elapse between points 2 and 3 so that immediate memory of
the text fades, before you attempt to translate it back into the L2.

Roger Ascham advocated "the double translation of a model book". He used Sturmius's
Select Letters of Cicero.

I mean that we have more than enough good methods.

I like Youtube polyglots because they are inspiring role models and they can give us
some good tips, but I am realistic I don't expect too much. I have my own limitations.

On the other hand, we do not need to be polyglots to enjoy an enriching and fulfilling
life.

Hi guys!

I just wanted to let you know that I finally had the chance of watching the workshop
Luca gave in Vienna and I must say that for all the language newbies (and even language
experts) it is really worth watching. Differently from the masterclass in Russia, this
one is only in English, with live interaction with student off and on-line. I think it
is the very first time that a polyglot shares his techniques the way Luca did, and...I
am very glad he did! Even if I myself am not a "rookie" in language learning, I learned
things I was not aware of at all, and it was a very pleasant surprise. So I just wanted
to share this with you.

Workshop

Очень интересный и содержательный семинар! Рекомендую посмотреть его всем!

Hi everybody, Luca and David made a great video about how language shapes personality,
and Luca speaks in a few languages to give a demonstration of how his body language
changes according to the language he speaks. It is already a popular video on YouTube and
I thought it was worth sharing it here.

How languages shape personality

Очень рекомендую посмотреть.

Luca makes it to Polish TV :-)

Luca on Polish TV
English captions available.

Во время интервью Лука отвечает на вопросы на прекрасном
польском языке. К видео есть английские субтитры.

Luca started making a very interesting series called “AskLucaAnything”. The first video is
in English,French and Spanish and deals with motivation, talent and maintaining languages.
The second one is in Portuguese, German and Italian and Luca talks about how to get a native
accent, the problem of interference with speaking 2 different languages and counting in a
foreign language. Very interesting stuff and definitely worth watching.

First Video

and the second one

Second Video

Надеюсь Вам будет интересно!

С наилучшими пожеланиями,
Амир

Listened to him speak Mandarin with Steve Kaufmann both made minor mispronunciations in intonation,
nothing serious. The conversation was easily to understand.

I haven't had a chance to watch the whole video, so I just skipped around for now ... but this
part stands out for me:

"I believe that interference decreases when we start to develop a personality in that
language."

This rings true to me. I never have interference with languages where I have been
fully immersed for a long period of time, and where I've been able to actually express myself
and who I am, rather than just deal with basic life needs. Whereas I am still challenged by
interference among my "book" languages. I'm looking forward to giving the video more time.

I would like to ask him a question: How to study a language with no learning material available ? :)
Like Malayalam or Telugu? :)
