Jonas Savimbi, leader of the Unita rebel group, and South African ally during the Angolan war.

From an interview with Fred Brigland: "Certainly an incredible linguist. He spoke four European languages, including English although he had never lived in an English-speaking country."

Wikipedia: He fluently spoke seven languages, including four European languages and three African languages.

French, English and Portuguese were some of them.

Nigeria's president Olusegun Obasanjo speaks at least 3 languages: English,Hausa and Arabic. He probably speaks some Igbo and Yoruba too, although I'm not sure.

Louis XIV of France took a Latin lesson every day for a long time while king. His formal education had been rather limited, but he wanted to be able to read Papal dispatches himself and did not trust any efforts to translate them for him. Ironically French to a large extent pushed Latin aside as an international language during his reign.

Minister-president Jan Peter Balkenende - The Netherlands.

He speaks Dutch of course, and I have heard him speak excellent English with a bit of an accent. He probably speaks good German and French, but I don't know that. Anyone offer some comments on Mr. Balkenende's language abilities?

The German equivalent of Who's Who tends to list the foreign languages of the people it has entries for. Not surprisingly, many report knowing English, sometimes French, Italian, Spanish or other languages.

I've heard Balkenende speaking German on German TV, he's absolutely fluent in German.

The German chancelor Angela Merkel, who comes from Eastern Germany and learned Russian as a compulsory school language, and is said to be fluent in Russian and English.
