Okay, now I'm going to try to post a link to a new online Latin dictionary someone recommended to me.

Not a whole lot to report.
SPANISH I read 30 pages of El Reino del Dragón de Oro, which took about 45 minutes, and I added some vocab to my Anki decks. I also had a 20 minute conversation (in Spanish, of course) with my Puerto Rican aunt. I was very pleased with how fluidly and naturally I was able to express myself - one step forward on the path to fluency! POLISH I read 10 pages of Kamienie na szaniec - I'm not sure exactly how long it took. Maybe 30 to 50 minutes? I had frequent interruptions while reading (texting is all very well, but it can be annoying), and I looked up quite a few words and noted down new vocabulary, so that probably accounts for the rather long length of time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I had a pretty good studying week, on the whole. I was very pleased!
POLISH 3 hours 35 minutes - 1 hour 5 minutes of flashcard review in Anki - 1 hour of flashcard organization + vocabulary review - 45 minutes of acquiring new vocabulary - 35 minutes of listening comprehension I have managed to transfer almost 100 of my paper flashcards into Anki. It has really been a good review for me, since I haven't seen most of these words in a while. Furthermore, I am carefully correcting any mistakes, clarifying any doubts, and researching any unknown information as I transfer each card. By the time I get through all 5,000 of them, I expect my Polish skills to have improved quite a bit! I also added some new vocab words. These came from the first 10 pages of Drużyna Pierścienia. I own The Hobbit and all three volumes of The Lord of the Rings in Polish, but I've never read the Polish versions. At first it was because they were way too hard and then it was because I was busy reading Polish classics. But recently in one of the subforums I discovered a link to the Polish audiobook version of The Fellowship of the Ring. I'm not sure if it's the whole first book or just the first volume, but in any case I was absolutely thrilled to find it! The Lord of the Rings has been my favorite book since my dad read it to me when I was 9, and I've been hard pressed to find good, free sources for Polish listening comprehension. If there are any other LOTR fans learning Polish, here is the link to the first chapter. (The earlier videos consist of the prologue and other additional material.) LATIN
4 hours 10 minutes - 1 hour 35 minutes of reviewing flashcards in Anki - 50 minutes of translating all the Exercise sentences in Units 17 - 19 of Collins - 1 hour 45 minutes of Chapter 38 of Wheelock's I never actually did the exercises for the last four chapters of Wheelock's; I am remedying that now. I added all the vocabulary for Chapter 38, completed the sections in the workbook, and used Wheelock's + Allen and Greenough's to do an in-depth review of the dative of reference. Man, my skills are rusty as far as identifying types of subjunctive clauses! Collins is way too easy when it comes to drills. I will be reviewing subjunctive clauses for sure! Over the next few weeks, these are my goals: - Complete the workbook exercises, the practice sentences, and the Sententiae Antīquae for the last four Chapters of Wheelock's - Translate some of the original passages at the back of Wheelock's - Add quite a few vocabulary words to my Anki deck - Review subjunctive clauses - Review all the uses of the dative case (or those which I have learned, anyway)! 7 hours 25 minutes - 2 hours 8 minutes of reviewing flashcards in Anki - 25 minutes of listening comprehension - 1 hour 17 minutes of vocabulary acquisition - 50 minutes of reading the poetry of Julia de Burgos - 2 hours 45 minutes of reading El Reino del Dragón de Oro Flashcard Count: 4,785 cards Author of the Week: Julia de Burgos I had a very good Spanish week! I chose Julia de Burgos as my author of the week, and I read her poems "Alba de Mi Silencio", "A Julia de Burgos", and "Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta". The poems were . . . interesting. Parts of them were very pretty, though. I found commentaries on the last two - some in Spanish, some in English - which really helped me to understand them better, since I'm not too good at interpreting poetry. However, I couldn't find any information about "Alba de Mi Silencio", so I am still confused about its meaning even though I understood all the words. I would have read more poetry, but I decided to finish El Reino del Dragón de Oro before Christmas. I have read over 100 pages since Tuesday, so I am now on page 306 - only 114 pages to go! That LOTR link is great! It's not easy to find free listening in something that is still new and challenging, yet still easier than native materials.

I'm glad you liked the link! :) I was very excited to find a free version, since my budget doesn't exactly permit the purchase of expensive foreign audiobooks. So far it has been a great source of vocabulary and review for me. LOTR is a challenging book in any language - I expect it's harder than most Polish contemporary novels. Of course, the difficulty can't compare with classics like Pan Tadeusz, Stara baśń, etc., but then in English the writings of Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and so forth are much harder than LOTR. So LOTR can act as kind of a bridge between the easy/intermediate/hard native materials and the really hard ones, I guess. Incidentally, I really need to write some sort of summary of the year and its successes and failures. I'm afraid I failed dismally in some respects, but in others I exceeded my expectations, so it was a good year all around.
