Si sigo a este paso, acabaré FSI Chinese dentro de tres meses, creo que voy a suplementar mis estudios con NPCR y enfocarme un montón en la escritura de los caracteres.
It looks like within a couple months i'll have finished FSI Chinese, soon i might toss in NPCR to try to really get some reading practice in, and not having internet at home essentially has meant that i've stopped studying how to write the characters. On memrise, i've got around 1400 characters. Of those 1400 i probably know about half really well and maybe maybe another 300 i could recognize in the right context. It's really a shame how comfortable it is to speak English here, at work everyone speaks English (the same thing happened to me in Spain, i always was around people who spoke English or who were my students) and there's not a whole lot of interaction outside of work. I'm still trying to figure out a way to immerse myself somehow, though the little free time i have i'm often just tired.
Echo de menos leer, antes disfrutaba tanto de leer en castellano, ahora ya no leo...

I highly recommened the NPCR series! I'm using it myself and it's excellent. I wouldn't fret over not being able to write in Chinese, as even Chinese people hardly write in Chinese these days. The most writing my family ever does is filling out forms. Just being able to read Chinese is important and I've got to say, 1400-1700 characters is really good ^_^

Any updates on the Freutsch front? Or have you just been focusing on Spanish and Chinese lately? (If so, I don't blame you; I've been spending a lot of time on Dutch and Chinese myself!)

Thanks, i picked up the first book and have the second book on the way. I've pretty much soared through it, but really appreciate all the reading practice. One thing i'm afraid of though is that the grammar explanations won't suffice when i start getting to things i don't already know. I'll just have to see when i get there, hopefully by then i'll have finished FSI (just finished Mod 7 yesterday!). I've been busy with a lot of things and struggling just to keep up with my Anki decks (which has gotten to be more of a burden than a help, i feel like it takes away a lot of active study time) and after a two week break for holidays i've been slowly working my way back into the routine. I should be finished with the first level of NPCR this week.
As for writing, typing on the computer is pretty easy and i can pretty much always recognize the characters i need, it's just a bit of a bummer that when i think of a word in my head i can't recall the shape of the character anymore, i have to see it written to recognize it. After i start to feel comfortable in Chinese (and get internet back) i'll hit the characters hard again.

Much to my dismay, very little. I've been watching a few French movies and posting on French forums, but very little conventional study because my time unfortunately has been much more limited than it was in the past. I tried to buy a few French books online the other day, but nowhere seems to like my Chinese credit card. I have lots of books online to read, but unless i'm setting time aside specifically for LR, it's hard for me to concentrate on a book on a computer screen. To be honest, i'm looking forward to being able to slow down my studies of Chinese a bit to try and build on my other two languages which, two quote (or try to quote) Spanky, have been at the CEFR level of "I suck" for far too long ;)
In other news, i've been writing in Spanish lately, which has been really enjoyable. For example, here is what i posted tonight to lang-8:

La vida es una palpitación fuerte, un terremoto que al estremecer tu mundo te da la vida para luego quitártela con el restablecimiento de la normalidad. La normalidad, dijo, es lo que vivimos a diario, la normalidad es sinónima a la muerte. Y así y así continuó, y quienquiera que fuera ahí escuchándolo, seguramente inclinó la cabeza de cuando en cuando fingiendo entender el delirio mientras le contemplaba los ojos, que los tenía muy (¡pero muy!) redondos que parecían canicas, brillando su humedad a la luz del sol.
Otras veces hablaba de cosas aún menos inteligibles, de enfermedades que (según él) no sólo mataban al cuerpo sino al ser entero y que ni te dabas cuenta. Cuando hablaba de esas cosas, se le humedecían un poco más los ojos. Qué pena hemos de sentir, dijo una vez, cuando nuestros últimos estertores nos cuenten de todo nuestro vivido que no vivimos...
Pausó un segundo para pasar la mano por el cejo, momento del cual su interlocutor aprovechó para intentar meter unas palabritas: "nuestro vivido" ¿qué? ¿Qué quieres...? ...pero aliviado el picazón del cejo, continuó:
...cuando por fin se nos revele la mancha imaginariamente imborrable de la que nunca nos dimos cuenta, que taladró con tanta saña sus raíces tan profundamente en nosotros que se convirtió en un pasado, algo real por nosotros vivido, tan fundamentalmente "nosotros" que no se nos ocurrió apartarlo de nuestras vidas, ni siquiera reconocerlo como algo ajeno a ellas. Y así nos chupó secos hasta la muerte.
De qué hablaba en esos discursos apasionados, él aparte nadie sabía en concreto, o al menos los que sabían, si los había, eran muy pocos. Yo por mi parte, me contentaba con escuchar los sonidos, pronunciados con tal seguridad y tanta emoción que a veces incluso pensé sobreentender algún mensaje perdido, olvidado. Llegué a creer que no toda locura es una locura, o que tal vez haya veces en la que la locura tiene más sentido que la razón. |

It feels nice being able to express myself a little more freely, writing and speaking still isn't as natural as i'd like it to be, but it feels like freedom after spending all day in Chinese!
