As far as I remember, he said he studied 20 something languages, but he considered himself fluent in "only" 4/5 of it, and he is in the learning process with the rest of them.
The media wants to create news, so it's better if we listen to the guy, not just read what the media wrote.

The media has said he speaks 23. Tim has always nuanced that instantly. I believe the
languages he says he is most comfortable in are French, Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew along
with English. I also believe Richard has said his Chinese is good and has confirmed his
German is quite good too (and Robert Bigler has also said this somewhere).
There's also all the other videos of him on youtube.

Why criticize Tim? He is not misrepresenting himself, journalists are the ones exaggerating his skills. We should be used to this by now and be smart enough to know better than to be taken in by these tactics.

When asked, he elaborates on his level. Technically, if you speak a single word of a language, than you can say you
"speak" that language. But let's not pretend that he doesn't claim to speak 23 languages.

I think he didn't hang around in the polyglot community enough to learn the rules of Polyglot Club. Rule #1 of Polyglot Club: "Never say 'fluent'." Rule #2: "Never say you 'speak' or 'know' a language, no matter what your level."
Personally I don't speak any language, and never will.

You can go further and burn him down if you want to. If you really want to find
something to criticise because you can't do what he can, be my guest. I am not gonna
play the jealousy game, haters gonna hate.

I thought that the first rule of the Polyglot Club was to not mention the Polyglot Club! ;p.
In all seriousness though, I've met Tim and he seems to have been led into making statements that sell...I
found him to be polite, bright, articulate and pretty honest about his limitations. Those media pressures can
be tough at any age...just my 2 cents. Whatever has been said, Tim is quite remarkable. :)
