Don't worry, I am immensely enjoying Romania.
The fact I speak Romanian is especially useful
with staff at some placements. It's double
useful with younger children, which I taught
at an orphanage. I have had to use it
frequently, it has come in handy several
times. I have held job and scheduling
discussions in Romanian.

Sounds like you're doing great!
I feel like I'm starting to speak Romanian, too :D Not really, but it's fascinating how much I can infer from English and Portuguese and thus sometimes follow my pupils' discussions about new words and grammar.

Yes, Romanian has a lot of cognate words with many other languages. I point this out to
adult students I've had - Romanian contains many words which exist in English and mean
the same, or can be inferred. I sometimes even work particularly with vocabulary in that
area.
Aside from that, I have now entered the realm of ESL teaching, and am taking small groups
of students on their own to teach them. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to reveal that I
speak Romanian. I think they have figured out that I can understand them, though...
By the way, I have taught at an orphanage, and I can tell you that knowing the local
language was a godsend. I was the first volunteer to speak it decently and it made a
world of difference with both children and staff.

Acuma sunt sigur că pot să mă descurc fără
multe probleme în română. Plus că citesc
foarte mult când este posibil să stau
liniștit. Așa că pot să spun că vorbesc
română.
