So che e
voi me considerati sincere.

More health problems over the past few days are slowing down my progress. This time
it's not the food, but the environment giving me an itch to scratch (literally) as
huge rashes popped up all over my legs and arms. A visit to a Chinese dermatologist
turned out to be the only solution, where they told me I had an allergic reaction to
some tree or flower (I may have touched one accidentally, or it may have been the
environment). Armed with half a pharmacy, and another Mandarin experience richer, I
have returned home.
My Mandarin isn't that bad, but since Chinese hospitals don't work like Dutch ones I
asked a colleague to accompany me (since it was really serious and quite a severe
rash; I kept scratching and my legs are basically bleeding empty. This turned out to
be a good move.
But now I can add that to my Mandarin adventures. Maybe all of you who live at home
and read books and watch movies have more luxury or respite, but I need to practice
Mandarin every day (I do, though, I get loads of oral practice). I still recommend
every expat to do the legwork and learn the local lingo. The mileage you get out of
it, even for something like the pharmacy, is amazing.

china, and also had quite an adventure in a hospital. Fortunately, she had a chinese

I hope you'll heal quickly! ;)

@guiguixx1: merci beaucoup!
Later, I will post a more definitive idea of my summer plans that I have been working
out.

My Italian and Spanish are entirely in passive mode :)

More problems with my rash, not much studying done, one not so happy Chinese camper.
I figure this is a good time to update you all on what I am doing over the summer, in
terms of improvement, challenges and so on, until the end of August or so (I will be
in Greece in September so that much is clear). I've decided to work on and improve a
lot of my old languages, some new ones, and keep on maintaining some of my current
languages. Gi ven I've been widening my scope into a really broad array of languages,
and given my travel aspirations, which are extensive, I hereby present to you the
following plans (if some language isn't on it, just expect me to do light
maintenance):
Russian: Preparing for the C2 exam. This is the biggest linguistic challenge
thus far for me - it's an attempt to get a language I learned as an adult to the level
of almost a native speaker. Not that my Russian is bad - it's worthy of a few
accolades - but this is the ultimate goal. This is a continuous project I'll be
dedicating time to every week, working on my weak spots in order to get to that
mastery level.
Mandarin: I live in China, and I will travel outside of Chengde in July, so I
hope to deepen my knowledge of China and be more socially active in using the
language. I don't speak bad Mandarin (I would probably be around HSK 3 level according
to an estimate), but it's nowhere near actually being fluent either. However even
conversational Mandarin (which, let's face it, I do speak; I speak and use Mandarin on
a daily basis) is a big boon. I hope to maybe set aside some time and learn some
characters, which will come in handy in the next project...
Korean: I will be spending one week in Korea in July, and I'm going to refresh
my Korean for this trip. My goal is to improve my Korean for use as a basic tourist,
nothing much beyond that. Just a refresher course in my terrible, terrible Korean :)
Maybe the characters will help with that, though...
Greek: My iTalki challenge will centre on Greek, because I am going to Greece
at the end of August. So it is my goal to improve my Greek and take it up a notch to
the point where I can do what I could do in China - benefit from immersion. This means
you will see a strong Greek focus throughout June.
Esperanto: Esperanto is the odd one out, but since I will be spending a week at
an Esperanto event in Hungary in August I will have to improve my Esperanto to a
higher level. I can read most of it, but I would like more practice so that I can
socialise in Esperanto in August. I will do that shortly before I depart.
German:As per usual, I spend a few days each year in Germany. Last year it was
Berlin, this year it's Munich (as per usual) and maybe Austria/Liechtenstein. I will
read die Verwandlung as preparation. And yes, I feel confident about handling Kafka in
the original.
Finnish: I'm doing some exploratory studies of Finnish in case I am visiting my
brother in Finland in the fall; he's studying there for a semester. It's good fun and
I'm managing to say some things already!
Portuguese:I want to get to a point where I can converse more rapidly in
Portuguese without the need for people to slow down. I hope I can take some Portuguese
classes to improve that.
As for the other languages: I will just maintain them. I will seek out Italian
material to read specifically in order to get more comfortable with that language.
