It's Update Time

Ok, there is not that much to update. But still...

I've been speaking Russian a lot over the past few days with my friends and considering
I speak it practically every day (and not just about simple topics either... I now have
the experience of being drunken IMed) and I've completed another class on iTalki as
well. I at least am sounding somewhat more Russian these days and I'm happy to see that
people have no inhibitions of messaging me at 3 AM their time, expecting me to fully
understand their babble. I guess once you're at that point then you probably ought to
be considered a speaker, hahaha....

I've also chatted some Swedish with jeff_lindqvist. That seemed to go fairly well but
I'll leave any judgement of my Swedish up to him, haha.

I've completed two lessons of Romanian plus the review lesson, adding all up to having
completed the first six weeks of Le Roumain sans peine. Today (actually, after this
update is done) I will commence lesson 43. I haven't studied Romanian since Wednesday
apart from some Anki so I probably ought to get back to it today.

I've not gotten much farther in the Routledge course (we're at 50 now) but I have
completed 14 (!) lessons of L'Hébreu in the past 5 days or so. The only reason that is
even possible is because all of this is already known to me, the level is pretty low.
They've introduced some verbs in the present tense, adjective conjugation, and the
smichut construction. Fortunately verbs in present tense were already known to me, and
all I learned were a couple new words I didn't yet know. But most of this has been a
joke so far. The problem really is that they spend a lot of this time making it so easy
on people because they also have to explain the Hebrew abjad and the niqqud, but the
problem is I studied that a long time ago and can read the dialogues no problem. My
problem with Hebrew is not the letters, but knowing what the unknown words mean (and
how to pronounce them if there's no niqqud, because knowing niqqud tends to be
essential for new words if you don't know what they are, although I guess you can imply
more from context if you have more context, but I don't).

In terms of fun I prefer the Assimil to the Routledge course, and their introduction to
the alphabet is WAY better, but the latter is way more thorough. I'm glad I have both.

And the last comment I'll make here is that I am enjoying using French as a base
language very much and that it's improved that language tremendously. I feel so much
more comfortable in French now.

No worries, you did great. I've seen a lot worse from people who've had a lot more exposure to the language (even lived in the country for decades).

Det är trevligt att höra!

About my other languages; after work I have dealt with two more lessons of the
Routledge Course, which were some useless things about trains (OK, not that useless
then) and verb forms being used as nouns, as well as how to ask how much something
costs in Hebrew.

I also spent some time completing the first lesson of Colloquial Icelandic which was
silly easy. The only thing left now for me to do is to enter all the new vocabulary
into Anki, which I will do gradually because I am not going to enter 200 words all at
once into Anki (and I also plan to do ~1 unit a week if all goes well. Less if all goes
downhill).

Hebrew: The First Milestone

Today was mostly busy spent watching Ajax becoming champions (this is important,
people!) and celebrating other things, but I can celebrate one other thing today:

I had my first experience speaking Hebrew myself to someone. And even though there was
a lot of searching for words, some messed up verb conjugations and a total lack of
future tense, I did get by in Hebrew. Mission 1 accomplished: get my Hebrew to an
understandable level where with a bit of gesturing and some goodwill I can instantly
say what it is that is on my mind. There is a base, Israelis would understand this. I
know this because I booked a trial lesson on iTalki and could moderately keep the
conversation going for 30 minutes. I had to ask "ani lo mevin" a fair bit but I
managed.

In other words, my Hebrew is now worth more than zero. It's still not very *good*, but
it's better now. And unlike Steven Wilson, I didn't give up after the present tense!!!!

(What this actually means: Tarvos, your Hebrew is terrible. What you need to do is
speak a shitload of Hebrew and then you will maybe approach fluency in 10 years. Yours
sincerely, elitist!)

Is what I did today fluency. No. Not even close. Is it a useful level of Hebrew to
have? Yes, as it's above tourist level. It's maybe an A2, but it's not useless at all,
and with some concerted work, I can get to conversational level in Hebrew once I finish
both textbooks. And that's not utopia at all folks.

תודה רבה!

לא למדתי הרבה בשבוע שעבר, אבל עם עברית הכל בסדר. קראתי וגמרתי הרבה שיעורים בספרים שלי.
לא קשה לדבר ולכתוב עברית.

מי רוצה לדבר עברית איתי?

מישהו?
