I don't think Renaud is cynical. He's part of an old french tradition of left wing, anarchist and realist singers. You can find similar texts from François Béranger (now fallen into oblivion but still on YouTube :)), Léo Ferré, Lavillier, and many more.
In the same vein, you can also listen to comic sketches of Coluche. Of course, Renaud occupies a special place in the heart of French because he knew so well use the slang and popular language used in the 70's and 80's in a poetic manner. Oui, Renaud est peut-être gauchiste et « réaliste », mais j'ai pas vraiment l'impression qu'il aime trop le peuple. Passer un moment entre amis pour le réveillon, c'est pas une question de justesse ou de moralité. Parfois, une petite fête peut améliorer la vie, même si la fête est très banale. Je ne veux pas dire que je n'apprécie pas Renaud. Un petit peu de cynisme peut être marrant[1], et il a écrit de la très bonne musique. [1] C'est un peu comme le pessimisme, sur lequel Chesterton a écrit « Insincere pessimism is a social accomplishment, rather agreeable than otherwise; and fortunately nearly all pessimism is insincere. » Cool stuff from yesterday Les Gardiens de la galaxie and Iron Man 3 (Canal+ via Francophone TV, Friday). These were pretty challenging for dubbed movies—it took me a good 20 minutes to fully tune into Gardiens, after which I understood 90+%. I also watched the beginning of Iron Man 3, but I was busy with other stuff as well, and I never did manage to tune in completely. The dubbing of both films was perfectly acceptable. Jason Brice, tome 2. The occult mystery continues! This has plenty of scenes of old-fashioned England, complete with opium dens and all the stage dressing you'd expect. Volume 1 could almost be read standalone, but volume 2 continues the story and ends on a cliffhanger. L'Expérience mort, tome 1. This is a fun BD about a project which attempts to travel beyond death. The art really carries the story here—it begins with the barque of Ra, suddenly glowing at night in a museum, and continues with high-tech machinery for passing beyond our world. I'm re-reading this preparation for reading volume 2, which I picked up in Montréal. Le livre du jour, podcast. This is a short daily segment about a book. If you like non-fiction (or mainstream fiction?), it's worth a listen. It's amazing how much French media I can enjoy in a day without making any particular effort other than to turn on the TV occasionally. But for this to happen, I need to have a wide range of fresh and appealing French media everywhere. As usual, Khatzumoto figured this out long before I did. :-) And it always amazes me how much difference it makes to get engrossed in a movie or a book. My comprehension always jumps after a while, even now. A mailing list for cool French media? I'm still thinking about creating a mailing list which sends out cool links in French a couple of times per day, in hopes of tempting readers to enjoy more media in French. Perhaps new subscribers could begin with a series of emails explaining how to use television and books starting from a lower-intermediate level, and I could introduce them to Izneo, Amazon.fr, the French web, and so on. I run into so many people who want to improve their French but who don't know how. They can often more-or-less read a newspaper article or understand some easy conversation, but they've been stuck at that level for a long time with no idea how to progress. Plus tard, avec son succès médiatique, il s'assagira un peu et deviendra lui-même un petit bourgeois de gauche. Pour la fête, je crois qu'il n'était pas le dernier, il a toujours eu un petit penchant pour l'alcool et les soirées bien arrosées. Tous ces fans savent que quand sa femme le quittera, il tombera dans un alcoolisme pathologique, au point qu'il en perdra sa voix. Ce qui est amusant, c'est que ce matin justement, il y avait un article du Parisien qui parlait de lui car il a écrit un nouvel album, ce que ces fans attendaient depuis des années. Thanks so much for telling us about your troubles with Contrevent. I had previously checked it (for free, using amazon's preview) out based on your recommendation and within the first page decided that this proved I was not ready for real French books. (When I've read fiction in French since then, I've stuck to translations from English.) I feel a bit better knowing that they're not all like this. I like hearing your thoughts on French books and other media, so count me as one vote in favor of such an email. 1 person has voted this message useful |
