Somehow I'm a few weeks behind with my updates again.

Over the last few weeks I've been focussing more on reading. I'm working my way through
A Homestay in Japan during my tutorials. In addition I've tidied up my Anki decks and
I'm now focussing on Kanji vocabulary. I've made sure that I've prioritised the AHIJ
kanji vocabulary to start with and I've also reviewed all of the the kanji vocab from
the memrise N5 course that I've imported into Anki. This time I've not disabled any of
the kanji vocab unless it was marked as "usually written using kana alone" in
tangorin.com.
memrise.com is now (seemingly) back on an even keel after a week or two of slowness.
I've not dived back into it yet as I was concentrating on keeping the Anki decks under
control. Last time I looked I was ~700 words behind on the memrise N3 course. I think
I'll have to catch up again in bursts.
I've set myself a target of just a bit less than one NHK EasyNews article per day, on
average. So here we are on the 10th day of December but I've only managed 5 articles so
far. So I'll push on with some more of those tonight. Luckily the available archive
goes back as far as about one month, so there are plenty from which to choose.
I've also set myself a target of watching all the episodes of 日本人の知らない日本語, and
I've so far managed precisely none of them. I think I need to give myself a bit of a
kick in the pants and just get on with it.
No grammar study at all this last week as I've been focussing on reading. I'm still
reviewing the odd grammar point as needed when reading, and I'm updating the notes I've
made, but I'm not doing any intensive grammar study right now.

No grammar again. Well, no explicit grammar study, but I am looking up grammar points
on an "as needed" basis. There's plenty of reading going on as I'm still working
through AHIJ with my tutor. When that's finished (in January I think) then I'll start
on the intermediate books of みんなの日本語: so there's be plenty of grammar then! In the
meantime the reading lessons are helping me to improve my listening speed and also my
comprehension (as she's now worked out how to tell when I've misunderstood something,
so I'm not allowed to get away with anything :-)).
Lots of 日本人の知らない日本語 this week, the whole series in fact. I can follow some parts
without subtitles, but not very much. I think Japanese subtitles would be grand, but
I've only found one set for episode 1 and they didn't work with VLC (although they were
readable in an editor, so I don't know what's wrong there).
I've been pushing to try and get my rejigged Anki decks back under control. I'm finding
that my kanji recognition is better than I expected. I've reviewed all the N5
vocabulary as kanji and it has mostly stuck. I'll try to get the N4 kanji vocabulary
started as soon as I have some time.

OK. Now I feel silly :-)
But thanks for pointing them out - I'll try watching a few and see how it goes.

Nothing terribly exciting this week. Audio continued as usual. I've also kept Anki up
to date and left memrise alone.
I've started to work through the JPOD101 LI S4 lessons, adding vocab and sentences to
anki.
I read through 12 articles on NHK EasyNews. I added all of the unknown vocab to anki,
although some of the more obscure government departments became suspended pretty
quickly! If I'm wrong and they're not that obscure, they'll show up as duplicates in
when another article mentions them and I try to add them again: then I'll un-suspend
them and pay more attention!
I found someone else at work who is learning Japanese. He brought in JfBP3 and I spent
15m reading through it one lunch time. From that brief look it seems that it gets you
about as far as Minna no Nihongo II. Apparently it doesn't cover very much (if any) 敬
語, so I'm still quite happy with my choice of MNN as my main text book. I'd still
happily work through JfBP3 if one came my way for a while.

Well it's Christmas, so as expected I didn't get that much done. In particular I didn't
commute much and so I didn't listen to very much audio.
I've managed to review most of the non-N2 vocabulary and N5+N4 kanji in Anki. I keep
adding vocabulary from NHK EasyNews so that's why it's "most" and not "all".
I looked back at my goals and realised that I wanted to make start on the N2
vocabulary, so I've done that. As my initial source was memrise, I'm finding that ~10%
of the words are not what I'd consider to be N2 level at all, but that's OK: there are
~4000 of them so some of them are bound to be new :-)
Looking back at my goals I also realised that I was supposed to listen intensively to
JPOD LI S3, so I've just started that, somewhat belatedly. I listened to the first 7
last night, so I need to work my way through another 17 today and tomorrow. That's
doable, I just need to prioritise the listening.
I've read though 13 MHK EasyNews articles this week. It seems that when I sit down to
do them I manage 3 or 4 in one go, but obviously on several days I didn't read any at
all. I should try to read at least one a day to see if I can form a habit here.

To finish off 2013 and allow 2014 to start on 1-JAN-2014, I'll log the last two days of
2013 separately.
Year ending 2013-12-31 4h31m
Audio: 2:19
Vocab: 1:41
Reading: 0:31
The audio here is all finishing off the JPOD101 LI S3 intensive listening.
The rest of the work was RTK and Anki.
All just bits and pieces fitted in as a few moments became available at various points
during the year-end festivities.
明けましておめでとうございます!!

The video section this week has been 仁保人の知らない日本語, this time without subtitles.
I've worked through one full NHK News article each day, and a few NHK EasyNews ones
when they've been available.
I've reviewed 350 new words in my vocabulary deck and I've finished SRSing JPOD101 LI
S4. I've worked through the first three days of 日本語総まとめ N3 文法. Once again the
distinction between らしい and みたい reared its nasty little head but this time I think I
may have cracked it.
I've been trying out some Upper Intermediate lessons rather than Lower Intermediate
dialogues on my commute. The Upper Intermediate lessons do have an English explanation
but it's more of an afterthought for the laggards at the back of the class like me who
don't understand Japanese. So it's maybe 80% Japanese. I think I'll stick with these
for a while as there's lots of Japanese meat for me to get stuck into.
I've kept Anki up to date but I've not yet re-started memrise.
