Is it worth setting up some kind of poll about what (if anything) we want to do for 2014? From what people have said we have at least the following options:
- current setup no changes
- current setup upper limit on Super Challenge revised (to B2, C1 or C2)
- choice of 50, 100, 200 in 1-4 categories (same target in each)
- choice of 50, 100, 200 in 1-4 categories (with different targets allowed in each)
- choice of any target (1-200?) in 1-4 categories (same target in each)
- choice of any target (1-200?) in 1-4 categories (with different targets allowed in each)
- general language tracker in the four categories, but no Super Challenge
- no more Super Challenge
I'm sure I've missed some suggestions - does any one have any to add?
Sort of assuming that if we go for more flexible targets then the B1 upper on the "normal" Super Challenge would also go, so haven't included options for keeping or loosing above. I guess flexible targets might also need to change the way the bot ranks things - i.e. Advanced Challenge no longer scaled down.
That doesn't include the start month - I'm guessing January or May are probably the most obvious contenders (though given the date now, a February start might also be worth considering). Putting that into a poll might make it far too long, so we could maybe consider that separately?

I think we're pretty good how we are to start over, but I plan to do half challenges in three or four languages
this time--including German, as my motivation to do maintenance work and grow my vocabulary. Given that
not a single Advanced challenge was finished, it seems reasonable to relax the level restrictions, which I plan
to ignore anyhow. (If there is serious objection, I can log German on my own and not on a bot, etc., but I'm
doing it either way.)

Perhaps we can indicate material difficulty, much like for the 6 week challenge you can indicate your work status (ie full-time, part-time, free)?
For example you can set a default difficulty when you sign up for the challenge (easy/medium/hard), and then you can list it for each individual book etc. Average difficulty can be a separate column, so we can see who's reading what is toughest for them, even if it makes them read more slowly.

Hi everyone, and sorry for going AWOL :-) Since I dropped out for a long time while I was dealing with RL
complications, catching up became a chore. I apologize.
When I set up this challenge I had a dream of being able to push for much larger quantities of reading and
seeing films. In that respect I think it has worked for many, but we do need to make some changes in order to
make the final goal accessible for more. I for one am far from reaching my goals, and it is obviously more fun
with a challenge that more people can succeed at :-)
Those of you who are most active - I would like your input to know what you think. (And by those who have
been most active, I do not mean just those who have completed one or more challenges, but all those who
have participated actively).
My first thought for a new challenge would be to cut the numbers in half. This would mean that to complete
the Advanced Super Challenge (level B2 to C2) you would need to read 100 books, and see a 100 films, but
that for the regular Super Challenge (A1 to B1) it would be enough to read/see 50 books and films. Half a
Super Challenge would then be 25 books and films.
When it comes to timing - I am open to a January 2014- September 2015 challenge or a May 2014 to
December 2015 thing. There are of course advantages to starting it at the beginning of a new year when
enthusiasm is high, on the other hand, the TAC teams tend to slow down after a few months, which might
make it a good thing to introduce the challenge in May.
What do you guys think?

I think we need to recognize the difference between watching and reading :)

So we should perhaps have different targets - 50 films and 25 books for a regular Super Challenge for
example? Was that what you had in mind?

I would suggest we stop talking about 100 or 50 books or whatever. I liked the way you originally formulated it Solfrid, but in practice it doesn't really mean much since books vary in length and 100 books is unrealistic for pretty much anyone.
Currently the standard 100 book challenge is 10000 pages. I don't think anyone is reading 100 page books, so we should either just be upfront and call it a 10000 page challenge, or redefine what a book is to a more reasonable number of pages (I'm about to finish the challenge having read 23 books, for instance). Since people seem to want to count pages, not books I would stick to pages.
In terms of length: I started the challenge at A1 a month in and am just about to finish the challenge (on page 9868 or thereabouts today) so I think 10000 is quite doable, so I would certainly keep that as one possibility.
In terms of films vs books: my thinking is that it takes (very roughly) an hour to read 20 pages, so 10000 pages is about 500 hours reading. If a movie is about 90 minutes then about 300 movies (450 hours) is roughly equivalent to 10000 pages. This actually became my personal goal for the challenge (10000 pages & 300 films) and it's keep a nice balance between regular reading and regular watching.
However, I am in favor of decoupling the reading and watching part of the challenges so people are more free to chose what they want to do.
I would be in favor of changing the challenge so it ran for one year between January and December, but I have a sense not many people would like that.
