Vielen Dank!

I was reading patrickwilken's log and posts and he has set out to read 10,000 pages this year. That sounded like a nice big number to me and have adjusted my goals for German and am going to try to hit the same mark.

I'm going to "cheat" a bit by starting with some easy A1 readers to get me going and to move up from there. I'm also going to listen to the audiobook version as I read (extensively). For scoring my activity goals, I'm only going to count listening without reading as "extensive listening". Listening while reading along = "extensive reading". I get distracted easily, and that's one of the reason I am an epically slow reader. Audiobooks help me stay focused while reading along (even when reading in my native language).

Today I knocked out 38 pages with an A1 reader. Actually found a few words I didn't know, and a few others I've never seen but easily understood through context. I'm going to read through a second one later to make up for skipping yesterday.

2014 Week 1 progress (short week, Jan 1 - Jan 5)

Short week, so I expect to come short of most, if not all, of my weekly goals (which are my total goals divided by 50 to give myself a two week cushion, and to give me nice round numbers rather than have 74.652 pages as a goal)

(Goals listed at below 2.0% done are behind pace, those above it are ahead of pace for the year)

German Progress and Goals (some changes from the list before)

Intensive Listening: 3 minutes of 5 minutes goal (Total goal 250: 1.2% done)
Sample Sentences: 777 of 1000 sentences goal (Total goal 50000: 1.5% done)
Intensive Reading: 3 pages of 10 page goal (Total goal: 500: 0.6% done)
Dual Language Reading: 10 pages of 40 page goal (Total goal: 2000; 0.5% done)
Extensive Reading: 146 pages of 150 page goal (Total goal: 7500; 1.9% done)
Hours Studied: 7.16 hours of 7 hours goal (Total goal: 350; 2.0% done)

Most of my extensive reading was done with A1 readers. Real easy stuff. I do have a goal for extensive listening as well, but I don't plan on starting that until later in the year.

I hit my time goal but fell short on the others. I think my reading speed will get faster as I go, making intensive and dual-language reading not take as long per page.

Korean

Full Dialogs: 8 dialogs of 15 dialog goal (Total Goal: 750; 1.0% done)
Intensive Dialogs: 0 dialogs of 15 dialog goal (Total Goal: 750; 0.0% done)
Sample Sentences: 1192 of 1000 sentences goal (Total Goal: 50000; 2.4% done)
Hours Studied: 3.66 hours of 7 hours goal (Total Goal: 350; 1.0% done)

I have a few other goals for Korean but won't get to them until later. I've also been listening to the TTMIK lessons again. Relistening to some from Levels 3 and 4.= right now to refresh my mind on some grammar I haven't seen in awhile.

Spanish

Full Dialogs: 2 dialogs of 5 dialogs goal (Total Goal: 250; 0.8% done)
Intensive Dialogs: 0 dialogs of 6 dialogs goal (Total Goal: 300; 0.0% done)
Sample Sentences: 292 of 500 sentences goal (Total Goal: 25000; 1.1% done)
Hours Studied: 1.16 hours of 2 hours goal (Total Goal: 100 hours; 1.1% done)

French

Full Dialogs: 0 dialogs of 4 dialogs goal (Total Goal: 180 dialogs; 0.0% done)
Intensive Dialogs: 6 dialogs of 6 dialogs goal (Total Goal: 290 dialogs; 2.0% done)
Sample Sentences: 64 of 500 sentences goal (Total Goal: 25000; 0.2% done)
Hours Studied: 0.25 hours of 2 hours goal (Total Goal: 100 hours; 0.2% done)

Japanese

Full Dialogs: 1 dialog of 9 dialog goal (Total Goal: 450 dialogs; 0.2% done)
Intensive Dialogs: 0 dialogs of 10 dialogs goal (Total Goal: 500 dialogs; 0.0% done)
Sample Sentences: 321 of 500 sentences goal (Total Goal: 25000 sentences; 1.2% done)
Hours Studied: 1.16 hours of 2 hours goal (Total Goal: 100 hours; 1.1% done)

I slacked off some on New Year's Day and took the 2nd off completely. I did get some good work in on the 3rd-5th. In a typical week, I'll spend 4-5 days, 30 min a day on French, Spanish and Japanese, but this week because it was short and I slacked off at the start, Spanish and Japanese got 2 days and French just 15 minutes on the 1. German got a few good days in and I got some good work in for Korean too over the weekend.

Total Hours Studied: 13.416 hours of 20 hour goal (Total Goal: 1000 hours; 1.34% of goal)

So far this year, I'm failing to totally annihilate my languages. My motivation this week was low. In fact, I was in a funk all week. Not sick, just kinda felt crappy and tired all week.

Week 2 Rundown
German: 0 hours
Korean: 4 hours
French: 1.16 hours
Spanish: 2 hours
Japanese: 1.83 hours

Total: 9 Hours (20 Hours Goal)

Year To Date: 22.416 Hours (1000 Hours Goal, 2.2416%)

One thing that stuck out to me this week was that I'm letting my minor languages interfere with my major languages. There are days where I'll study French, Japanese and Spanish for 20-30 minutes each, "to get them done and out of the way so I can spend the rest of the night on Korean or German" only to feel fatigued and unmotivated after and I end up not doing anything in either the rest of the night. Most of my Korean this week was done on days I did not study the 3 minors.

So for the time being, I'm going to drop them. I don't even feel like I'm making any progress, either. They're just time sinks right now. Fun time sinks, don't get me wrong. But they are disrupting my rhythm with Korean and German. So they get the chop for now.

My ultimate goal is still 1000 hours this year, 20 hours per week.

Week 3 rundown
German: 0 hours
Korean: 6 hours 40 minutes

Total 6 hours 40 minutes out of 20.
Year to Date: 29 hours 5 minutes (1000 Hour Goal, 2.9%)

Terrible week. If I didn't wake up with a migraine, I got one by mid day most of the week. And I had a social thing to do all day Saturday so I only had half a weekend to do some catching up.

The good news is that in those nearly 7 hours, I met my goals for listening to dialogs and I demolished my sentences goal. I want to read 1000 sentences in Korean per week, I managed over 2000. Total time I spend reading in Korean per day (the days I do it) is ~60-100 minutes. Listening is only ~20 minutes. I do want to increase that to at least 60 minutes. I've been quickly building my "finished dialogs" playlist that I put on shuffle and listen to without looking at the transcript.

Week 4 (Jan 20 - Jan 26)

This weekend, I decided to work French and Japanese back in.

Korean: 7 hours, 40 minutes
German: 2 hours, 45 minutes
French: 55 minutes
Japanese: 40 minutes

Total: 12 hours (Goal: 20)

Year to Date: 41 hours, 5 minutes (Goal: 1000, 4.11%)

Korean: Another week of over 2000 sentences. Guess I should double my sentence goal from 50k to 100k. In fact, my time was 40 minutes over my goal for the language (7 hours a week, 350 hours studied this year) and I still didn't work on Korean as much as I wanted to because I was in bed sick all day for a few days.

I finally have a sizable playlist of dialogs for extensive listening. I spent about 45 minutes this week listening to the playlist, without transcripts. I just hit shuffle and sit back.

German: I read 150 pages this week, all A1 graded readers.

Week 5 (Jan 27 - Feb 2)

Doing this small update now instead of tomorrow because I'll be at a friend's house all day for a Super Bowl party, so I won't be doing any language learning. Not that I did much language learning this week. I got caught up in a few other things but I'll get back on track on Monday.

Korean: 4 hours, 10 minutes
German: 1 hour. 15 minutes
French: 30 minutes
Japanese: 35 minutes

Total: 6 hours, 30 minutes

Like I said, just got caught up in a few things this week. Only spent 3 days of the 7 learning languages, and 1 day was just 1 hour of Korean. I did get a good deal done the last two days though.

Glad to see that Korean is going so well! What does your reading material consist of?
