Here's the link to my January challenge, done with fifteen minutes to spare to
midnight! :P I'll try and sub it with English as well as transcribe the Mandarin and
Korean soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-pNB_IxUyI

Sorry I didn't have a script for this video (just some main points in English at most)
so I kinda just rambled on for five minutes. It's pretty boring haha.
Also wow my Mandarin sucks even I can tell. I was gonna cut it out but then I thought
#YOLO, I might as well keep this around so I can see how far I've come. My Korean also
needs pronunciation work and just general speeding up, I still have trouble fully
expressing what I want to say. also I know that the audio/video is off sync at times,
last time I'm using this recording software =.="

EDIT: Adding transcription, will translate into English at school LOL.

Hehe glad to know I'm not the only procrastinator!

If you don't mind me offering corrections: student is "학생", not 학상 but I think
that's just a typo :P Also for "97에요", I think it should be "97이에요", since 97 ends
in a consonant "구싶칠." I'm not too familiar with introducing your age based on your
year of birth but I'm pretty sure you can do it like this, I usually say x년에 태어났어요
(was born in year x) though, but this way also sounds right. Maybe a native speaker can
clarify?

Nooooooo, I didn't make it on time!!
Well I did make my audio on time but didn't find the time to actually write a script of
it nor translate it. I'll translate it sunday evening or monday. Sorry for the trouble.

I just had a way busier week than expected and this weekend is just going to be worse.
I did register for the 6WC (for Norwegian to motivate myself a bit more), but will
probably have trouble entering a lot of hours. This is going to be a tough month (I
have to find an internship before the beginning of March and my finals are in the
beginning of March before starting a second half semester when I will 3-days weeks so
which means I'll have all the time I want to study language).

Anyway, here's my audio : https://soundcloud.com/mathias-barra/0zekfscr3aqw

I wanted to prepare it well, but in the end, I am pretty bad at reciting texts and I
thought it'd be better to show my actual level (when I am over-stressed). Obviously, if
I were to write, it would be better. And I talked really fast so my accent is not that
good and I made thousands of mistakes.. I hope you'll be nice with me even though all
this might be considered a big excuse!

I'll try to find some time next week to actually check out the last intros. I just took
a glance at them and it seems quite interesting!

Sorry again for not being very present for now.. .

Wow, great to read and listen to all these new introductions! 18/21 people have completed the first challenge and have language skills as strong as an ox (牛) - excuse the terrible cheesiness :D

Evita: 안녕하세요? 제 이름은 에비타예요. 저는 81년 생이에요. 저 라트비아 사람이에요. -> maybe you can reduce the number of 저s. Koreans don't really use it that much and I've heard if you overuse it people might think you're self-absorbed. Of course that's not an issue when you're studying Korean. This would be an easy way to make it sound more natural: 저는 81년 생이고 라트비아 사람이에요.
제 취미가 언어 공부하고 자전거를 타기하고 테니스를 보기예요. -> I would change this to 제 취미는, because you're starting to talk about a new topic here. If your hobby is watching tennis it might be better to say "watching tennis matches", which would translate to 테니스 경기를 보다/관람하다.
I enjoyed your recording! Interesting that your textbook talks about Starbucks :)

Silbermond: Cool that you wanted to become an author as a kid! I also did, but I don't think I could pull it off. I'm too much of a perfectionist, so much so that it can become painful to write when it's not just for fun.

LittleBoy: Hope you get well soon! (If you're still ill.) Another aspiring writer? :)

Kami: 생일 축하해요! Maybe that means you're 17 now in Korean age. 저는 97에요. -> you can either use picnick's suggestion or the structure Evita used: 저는 97년생이에요.

picnick: I really enjoyed your video! I was so happy to even understand your Chinese sentences :D You did really well, considering that you even did it all off the cuff! When I tried I had a lot more pauses. Obviously speaking in grammatically flawless Korean is extremely difficult (I definitely can't do it), so I suppose you might already know these things. Just a few things I noticed in your written text: 더 길은 자기소개 -> 더 긴, 내 삶에서 학교와K팝이 없어요. -> 학교와 K팝밖에 없어요 ^^ 네 여기까지 오시면 장말 감사함니다. -> usually 여기까지 들어주셔서... (maybe 들어주셨으면 is possible)

yuhakko: definitely sounds good, but I have no idea what you were talking about ;) Could you post a translation or short summary in English? Next time I hope you'll also include some Korean :) Hope you get less busy soon to enjoy the 6WC!

I'll post the next challenge soon, just need to formulate it first (speaking of procrastination...)

FEBRUARY TEAM CHALLENGE

Time for the second team challenge. It's a short month, so I thought we should have some fun while learning some new words and maybe also grammar. As Asia is pretty big on Karaoke, singing can be counted as a survival skill ^^ If you're planning a holiday, it's definitely useful to know a song in your target language very well - I learned this the hard way, stumbling through verses I couldn't read fast enough. You have time until February 28 to learn a song of your choice by heart. Just as was the case last time, ideally you'll pick a song that is challenging for you: if you're quite advanced you might want to focus on difficult lyrics or fast rapping. If you're a complete beginner, try to understand the whole song by looking up words and grammar and asking your teammates for help. If learning all of it by heart is still too difficult, try to get at least the chorus down. You can complete the challenge in one or several languages. Once you're done, please tell us how it went on the team thread and post a link to your song (if possible), as well as the lyrics and a translation. For the brave among us: posting a recording of you singing your song is a plus ^^

Renate, thank you for the corrections, they make sense. About Starbucks, haha, the truth is that I've never had a Starbucks coffee - both because they don't have any cafes in Latvia and because I don't drink coffee. But the textbook is quite current, they even had a section on text messaging and smilies!

About the February challenge: oh, the song challenge is here. I knew we wouldn't be able to escape it, hehe. Picking the right song will be the most important part.
