So, I think the best place to post our mini-challenges is going to be in here (I've
also posted them on the Website) since we receive corrections here. So, here's my shot
at the second challenge:

Mini Viking-Challenge #2 Write three sentences about who you have in your family:
Jag har en liten familj. Min far är 61 år gammal och min mor är 55 år gammal. Jag
har också en bror, han är 28 år gammal och har en fru och ett barn. Jag är 23 år gammal
och jag bor tillsammans med min flickvän.

The challenges are fun to do! I've already done the first 6 now and I'm really enjoying
it! I'll post a maximum of 1 a day, since else correcting it will be a big bother. I
hope it's not too annoying if I post 1 in this thread every day (Unless we have to post
it on a different spot? But I've seen the other Teams also posting it in their Team
Threads).

It's so silent in here! I'll just continue posting mini-challenges.

Mini Viking-Challenge #3 Describe a friend in six sentences. What does she/he look
like? What is she/he like as a person?

Min kompis är 1,85cm lång och har brun hår. Han bor i en liten by 10 minuter borta från
mig. Han är 24 år gammal och han är en jättebra kille. Han är också en gitarrspelare
och jag har spelat i en band med honom. Hans mor kommer från Kanada så vi pratar mycket
engelska med varandra eftersom vi tycker att holländska är ful. Han är det snällaste
person jag känner och han har ett hjärta av guld.

EDIT:
I was wondering, are there any Vikings that are joining the
6 Week Challenge? I have never done it, but
it seems interesting.

NORWEGIAN LESSON NUMBER 2 - WORD ORDER - THE YODA RULE - OR THE V2 RULE

You may wonder what Yoda has to do with anything, but those of you who have seen Star Wars may remember that his word order was sometimes reversed, and a bit odd. Word order is something that EVERY SINGLE student of Norwegian struggles with, and I thought I would give you a heads up, and make you notice this right from the start, because if you get this right, you will really impress people. And as far as I know roughly the same rules apply also for Danish and Swedish, so I recommend that you all pay really good attention to this one.

The general rule for word order in Norwegian, is like in English. SVO Subject, verb, object.

Nina saw the cat - Nina så katten.

I hated math - Jeg hatet matte.

He ate an apple - Han spiste et eple.

So far, no problem.

If you however start the sentence with an adverb of time or place, the urge for a Norwegian to have a verb as the second element of the sentence (V2) is so strong, that it reverses the word order.

Nina saw the cat -           ; Nina så katten.
Yesterday Nina saw the cat       I går så Nina katten

I hated math                        Jeg hatet matte.
Last year I hated math                 I fjor hatet jeg matte

He ate an apple                                 Han spiste et eple.
At school he ate an apple         & nbsp;På skolen spiste han et eple.

I know it looks a little weird, but once you get used to it, it will be a walk in the park. And you will really, really impress people. No native speaker ever gets that one wrong, but I have heard foreigners who have lived in Norway for 20 years make a mash out of it.

The examples I have given are fairly simple, and at a beginner stage, stick to that, but for those of you who are more advanced, it might be practical to know that the same rule goes for more complicated structures of time and place.

If instead of
( Last year)    I went to Venice - you write

(In the far away time of the golden years) I went to Venice, both will have the verb reversal in that sentence in Norwegian.

(I fjor) dro jeg til Venezia
(I den fjerne tid av de gylne år) dro jeg til Venezia

And if any Scandinavians read the last sentence - yes I know that it is far fetched, to put it mildly, I was deliberatley trying to make it complicated :-)

Please notice that this rule only applies if the adverb of time or place is at the BEGINNING of the sentence. If it is at the end, it just follows the regular English pattern.

Jeg så ham i går.
I saw him yesterday.

VIKING CHALLENGE NUMBER 3

I am deeply impressed :-) Everything looks correct to me (a little uncertain about "sovde" though) but I'll let
Jeff have the final word. You have understood the point I made perfectly! Great job!

I'll cheat and look up some example sentences in my grammar book.

01. På gaden var det fire drenge.
02. I dag, hvor svært maskineri bruges i skovbruget, er fortidslevnerne truet.
03. Her er tre pærer.
04. Her er den bog jeg snakkede om.
05. Samme dag kom han hjem.
06. På dette sted er søen dybest.
07. Hos Andersens var ingen hjemme.
08. I familien er der flere Jørgener.
09. Mest spænt var jeg i går.
10. Nu er det gjort.

And as a bonus:

Hvem er det? -- Also simple interrogatives have V2 word order.
Who is it?     -- In English, too.

@Kez, @Solfrid:
It should be "sov". Sova, sover, sov, sovit. There's also a small typo/spelling error in the first sentence: "spelada" should be "spelade".

Thanks for the corrections Sans-Serif & Jeff!

And I'm just going to keep on posting mini-challenges, could anyone be bothered to
correct them? I hope it's not too much work ^^

Mini Viking-Challenge #4 Give a five-sentence long description of the town or city
you live in.

Jag bor i en by i Holland med ca 8000 invånare. Den har en tågstation, ett köpcentrum
och en klubb (klubben är skit!). Jag vill inte bo här eftersom det är tråkig. Det finns
ingen natur här, bara byggnader och hus. Om du måste gå till skola eller om du vill gå
ut med vänner måste du åka till en stad 10 kilometer från här eftersom det är tråkig
här.
