Hi Team mate! Thought I'd drop by and leave a comment! I really like how you organized
your thread and your goals! Setting concrete goals like that is something I am really bad at, as I have no idea how much I'll be able to study for a month. But I will consider being more specific about my goals as well. You log inspires me to study more intensively every day :D Also, it's great that you write some German in your log, that way you can practise, other people can help you out and we can all see your progress. It looks like you are trying to translate word for word. This won't work! Try to concentrate on the words and structures you already know and build sentences using them. Trying to express too complex thoughts too early will make your German incomprehensible, as you lack some of the vocabulary and of the grammatical structures to express them correctly. By the way, the German word for "less" is "weniger". "Minus" is only used in mathematics: 6-4=2 "sechs minus vier ist gleich zwei". @Wingsuet, thanks! You know, organising skills are just skills, and that means you just need to develop them. I hadn't any idea either, so the January part of my log is like running an experiment. If you think it's good, I encourage you to hop on it!
@Josking, wow, I'm kind of embarrased. Thanks again for all your corrections. I think it's a good advice, since I always tend to go ahead of myself. @Hekje, are you starting Dutch? I'll follow your log too, then. I'm interested in learning practical Dutch in order to be able to communicate in the Netherlands. As Mandela said, if you speak a language which somebody understand, you'll reach her/his head, but if you speak his own language, you'll reach her/his heart! Ademáis, o fin de semán estive (por fin) estudando algunhas cousas da gramática galega. Non é moi complexa agás un par de cousas, ao menos aquila que vin, aínda que tódolos apuntamentos están en galego e dime conta que non sei tanto vocabulario coma pensei. Iso sí, as perifrases, que é o que fum mirar, as coñecía xa. Supoño que aínda terei que ollear os apuntamentos de novo para non esquecer tódalas perífrases. Se tivese máis tempo estudaría máis y mellor galego, pero non podo. Espreito non esquecer o que xa sei, ao menos, e ir aprendendo novas cousas pouco a pouco. Haha, certainly. This is a bit redundant because you found my log, but - yeah, I've actually spent a year and a half on Dutch. I still very much feel like a beginner in a number of ways, so we are sort of in similar places. :) Where will you be traveling in the Netherlands? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Please don't be embarassed. It's quite natural to make mistakes in the beginning, and I know the urge to write and speak from day one. But sometimes it's wiser to concentrate on the input and take small steps in order to make real progress. I think if you consolidate your grammar and learn some extra vocabulary, you will soon be able to write and speak much better. Keep it up! :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

@Hekje, well, I think you're far and away to be a false beginner, I wish to know all the Dutch you've learnt so far. By the way, I'll be in the Netherlands next month! I'm thinking I should learn some Dutch (just the rudiments of the grammar and vocabulary construction) since February 1st.
@Kez, many thanks! As I said above, I'll start next month. But that won't be a real study but a touchdown. I hope I have time and enough confidence to start with Dutch properly about mid March. @Josquin, yes, you're right again. I'm focusing my main efforts on vocabulary. It was a bit too harsh to me, because I wasn't used to such combinations of consonants and their sounds. Now I can remember new words more easily, so perhaps it's time for me to expose myself to more input. What to do with English I decided to record all the vocabulary I learned since October '11 in an Anki desk. This is because I don't want to carry up physical material. Also, those words had their moment to be studied and now I just want to review them randomly, so the system of flashcards is not a bad idea, even though I don't like it as a first approach. I started today to build the desk and I have got 555 words, phrasal verbs and phrasals so far from just about 1/5 of the 1/2 notebook. By the way, how could I forget so many words? (...) Anyway, I'm struggling with myself because I don't know if I will consider English as a language of study from March on. There are pros and cons. What I do know is that I want to review my entire vocabulary before going ahead. As for my English skills, I'm noting I got clumsy when speaking. My speaking used to be fine, even pretty good, but now I see it got rusty. My writing is just fine, though I think it used to be better. Conversely, I think my listening, my reading and perhaps my grammar have improved lately. By the way... ... January is coming to its end. I don't know if I'll reach my initial goals, but the effort offsets a possible failure, since I'm focussing myself on things such as German grammar and Galician vocabulary, though they're not being recorded. EDIT German Today mein Lehrer taught us the Präpositions we need to locate things into the space, so now words such as 'hinter' or 'zwischen' aren't a mystery anymore.
