Lesson 10 from Méthode 90 completed.
So far, my best expectations about this method have been confirmed. It has most, if not all, of the best features from Assimil, i.e., nice pace, build up on previous material, gentle introduction to grammar, simple dialogs based words that seem to be the first ones everybody needs to learn etc. For me, the choice of not having pinyin below the characters is THE best feature of this method, contrariwise to Assimil. I've read that some people prefer the Mandarin Assimil way. I really cannot understand it. To tell you the truth, I even seldom read the pinyin on the other page, mostly to confirm some tones. Anyway, we are all different people. I'm also enjoying very much the exercises, although they lack drills like BSC which at some point in the future will be back to my schedule. Started to read "Susan you mafan".
Very basic vocabulary. At this point, my Anki deck has about 300 characters (plus some 50 "radicals") and contains most of the words in this book. Those that aren't there will sooner or later be. Indeed, it'll take a long while in some cases, because there are characters which will appear only in lessons 70-80 from Méthode 90. Anyway, I'm looking for every word, but I'm not including them into my deck. There is a lot of repetition, which would be otherwise very annoying, but I don't care, because being able to recognize even those basic characters in a "real" text is very rewarding ;-)) Of course, I won't reread this book, the next step will be "Anna mei banfa", from the same author, which seems to be at least as easy. There are, however, some problems. Some traditional characters haven't been "translated" both in the text and in the glossary. The glossary has errors and some words are missing. The Mandarin family names series starts to grow. I'll use the genealogical program Genopro to build and organize it. I won't hurry, let Méthode 90 lead the pace.

I'm testing this input method for Mandarin. So far, it seems to help me to visualize how more complex characters are built.
I know that there are lots of other options, but this seems to be an area where personal factors are more relevant than (dis)advantages of each method. A picture might help:

My new favourite dictionary online is MDBG. Among other features, it has the "four corner code", about which I'll talk later.
"Susan you mafan" is getting more interesting, but it also means that I'm more often needing to search the meaning of new characters. Just one more exercise and lesson 13 from Méthode 90 will be finished, which means "end of CD 1"!! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

During my trip next week I won't bring my books, which means that the usual study pattern cannot be kept. It seems the perfect week to start doing dictation exercises. I've the audio and text in my iPhone and could do that anywhere. Besides, I've decided to try some podcasts.
My first option was Cslpod. However, I didn't like it, not at all. Almost no way to customize things. It may be good for advanced students but Cslpod will probably never again be on my list. My second choice was Chinespod and so far I'm enjoying it. Besides, there's a 99 cents for 1 month promotion and this should be enough for me to decide about continuing or not with it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Dictation in Mandarin must be seen as a semi-active activity and it's about the most useful exercise that I've been doing so far.
I'm enjoying it a lot and although at this point to have a "perfect" calligraphy isn't among my priorities, it's nice to be able to write the Chinese characters by hand at a reasonable level. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Already for many years I've been among the people who believe that technology may be helpful for language learning, as well as for other things, of course.
However, I must say that I HATE itunes (without capital letter, it doesn't deserve it). Of course, it would be to ask for too much if some Apple programmer would be a language learning addict as well. What annoys me the most is that it is bad on purpose, they want it this way, for sure!! This is language related whining, because I was trying to make things easier to organize my flashcard pictures, but the hateful itunes doesn't allow it. Shame on you, Apple!!
