OK, still doing the usual: reading a lot, regular skyping, and watching mediocre German TV programs now and then. Went on a business trip to Switzerland and got in a bit of practice. Still not doing any writing, though...

Good to see you are getting regular speaking as well as reading/listening. Sorry that you can't get better programs. That really is one of the big big advantages of living in Germany. It's a shame that electronic copyright laws are so backward. How did you find Swiss German? My wife, when she was a student, worked in a call center, and would get callers from across the German speaking world. The Swiss were always very polite, but she had a lot of trouble understanding them, even after they switched to Hochdeutsch. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

In a fit of madness I signed up for a 50-book challenge for 2015 on Goodreads: 50 book challenge.

February 2015
In February I read 1783 pages and watched 33 movies. A couple of big changes this month. I have fallen off the wagon with Anki. I was hoping to really use it to build up my passive vocabulary this year, but after a couple of months of enjoyable use, I developed a an increasing aversion to using it and after a week of missing training stopped altogether. On the positive side, I have started to read much more and find (at least for simpler books) that I can read quite comfortably without a dictionary. I am finding my spoken German somewhat frustrating at the moment. I understand what people are saying, but have difficulty expressing myself clearly. Hopefully this will gradually improve over the course of the year.

March 2015
In March I read 0 pages (!) and watched 26 films. March was a very quiet time for German learning for me. I am continuing to watch German TV/movies, but reading-wise I didn't open a German novel this month. I have been slowly reading my first English language book in ages, Naomi Klein's 'This Changes Everything', but even this relatively slowly as I am getting distracted by the upcoming birth of my daughter (any time now!!). Looking back over my progress over the last few years, Feburary/March always seems like the slowest period for me. There are probably various reasons for this, but the slow-down this time seems in part due to me wanting a bit of a break after a pretty intensive level of German immersion over the last eight months after I learnt of my wife's pregnancy. I need to get back into German reading soon, but I am not too worried if I take a bit of a break over the next month or two. I can recommend the new German film 'Als wir träumten', which chronicals the lives a group of boys in Leipzig immediately before and after the events of 1989. Gritty and depressing, and one of the best German films I have seen in last few years.
