also, *pensava che stava solo somehow seems wrong to me. or is it better to use fosse/stesse? |

In this sentence <fosse> is the correct option.

Before I write come up with more sentences: is this correct?
1. Ne ho visto ballando quando pensava che era solo. (quando pensava di stare solo) |

The second part of your sentence, aside from the above correction is fine, but I cannot understand what you want to say in the first part <Ne ho visto ballando>.

Just trying to use ne in various ways, haha. would it be just "l'ho visto ballando"? or even ballare?
does "quando pensava di essere solo" make sense too?
Many thanks for your corrections :)

Ah, at first i thought you were saying that you saw some dancing while you thought you were alone, eg. you thought you were alone, then you looked out the door and some some (cats, monkeys, dinosaurs) dancing ;)

Not actively, but i did do EuRom 5 and EuroComRom so it's mostly passive. Now i like to try to keep up my Italian a bit by reading and watching Italian TV shows. Lately i've been watching the new Braccialetti Rossi series as i've already seen the original Catalan series (though in my opinion the Catalan version is much more interesting). I've also been thinking of trying to incorporate Italian into the Super Challenge, but i might do something like 2 books Spanish, 2 books Catalan, 1 book Italian. There's a lot of Italian books on my to-read list, at least ;)

<L'ho visto ballare> is correct, if you want to make this sentence sound more natural you need to specify who is that "lui" who's dancing and add more elements. I'll give you a couple of examples:
A. Hai visto mio fratello ieri?
B. L'ho visto ballare alla discoteca xxx -or- L'ho visto ballare con Giulia.
If you don't add the question first, the dialogue would be:
A. L'ho visto ballare alla discoteca xxx.
B. Chi hai visto?
A. Tuo fratello.
<L'ho visto ballando> is wrong, but you can add a few elements to turn it into a correct sentence:
A. Hai visto il mio amico?
B. L'ho visto di sfuggita mentre stavo/a ballando.
Note that with <stavo> you are dancing, whereas with <stava> he is dancing.

Yes, that's correct but like the previous sentence you need to add some context unless you use it as a reply.
1. Quando pensava di essere solo Marco ha iniziato a giocare ai videogiochi.
2. Quando pensava di essere solo mio fratello ha smesso di fare i compiti.
Or if used as a reply:
A. Quand'è che Marco si è messo a telefonare al suo amico?
B. Quando pensava di essere solo.

I'm glad you found them useful :) If you don't understand some words/expressions I used in my examples and you would prefer to have the English translation let me know! I tried to keep the examples simple so that other learners may benefit from them.

Thanks! I kinda asked whether the parts make sense in the context of one another. Like this:
Mio fratello è romantico, l'ho visto ballare quando pensava di essere solo.
Can you please have a look at the sentences in my log too? :) BTW translations of examples are not necessary. I've completed a half super challenge in Italian and in general I understand a lot, now just fixing my grammar.

That's correct, you can also say <è una persona romantica>.

I already did :) I mean...I prepared my reply yesterday and was ready to submit it, but got an error when I did and I wasn't able to retrieve what I had typed so I'm now re-writing it.
