On a side note, can I ask your thoughts on
reading vs courses? I began using courses
HEAVILY and then moved to a mixture of half intensive (course) study and half
extensive (reading/ subtitle reading in L2/ watching with L2 as main audio)... I have
read that you need extensive coverage to readlly come across enough words enough
times, but if doing only intensive courseswork with SRS as well you're not too likely
to need that extensive coverage by reading are you not?

All of the courses I've seen are just elaborated phrasebooks, so they serve a
completely different purpose than reading, and I don't know how to compare the two.
I've done very few courses and I've never done "intensive courseswork with SRS" so I
cannot say or predict how it'd work out. Reading has various benefits, but if the
purpose is to memorise vocabulary, to get repeated exposure to an already-learned
word, I find SRS much more efficient.

My experience is that I do well although I don't read much. However, I listen to the
radio and my grammar & vocabulary are strong, so I guess either radio+grammar+vocab
make up for the lack of reading, or radio+grammar+vocab are more important that
reading.

Thanks smallwhite, I really appreciate your reply. I understand you can't say from
lack of experience with courses how it compares vs reading.

I'll endeavour to improve my SRS (I found I was just lingering on cards far too long
while studying them, and probably entering too much detail while entering them). Now
while studying the cards I just answer, read one example sentence if I have multiple
and move on (instead of trying to go through numerous example sentences word for
word).

I really wanted to incorporate spelling into my SRS system but my program is having
major issues with the option unless I create a whole new deck which I actually decided
in the end I don't want to do. I've mentioned it to the developper and he's hopefully
going to work to resolve it. In the meantime I gave Anki a trial run last night and my
first impression is I don't like it. So I'm back using my app Flashcards Deluxe which
I actually find much more efficient than Anki- it's much quicker to enter cards- i'm
only slow due to too much detail, but I haven't used Anki enough yet. Your speedier
methods are in the back of my mind while I use my SRS deck smallwhite, and first take
this morning I"m getting through cards MUCH quicker and I think I"m better off for it.
Cheers again, here's to efficiency ;) (at least with SRS, perhaps not my courses)
Thanks for dropping by and good luck with your language learning!

... I think i'm going to do exactly what I said I wasn't going to do and focus solely on
courses for a while (as well as SRS)... That's where my motivation currently is, it's
probably stupid I know, but i'm going to do it :)

Stay tuned for more idiotic developments and complete changes of study plans in the next
few minutes ;) (ie completely ignore this post)

A horse is a horse of course of course,
you see horses are even made of courses, for realz,
science will soon discover that everything, a dog, a cat a plover,
Danny Glover- are all composed of nothing but courses,
Language courses of courses even sauces, condiments and flying saucers
When it boils down to it, fundamentally, essentially are all courses
Depending on the perspective tho, you just don't know
Under an electron microscope whether it'll be
A new kind of language program via audio CD or mp3,
AAC? A textbook, online membership, streaming required or old school DVD
I'll never leave my courses not even if any of them want divorces
We had a ceremony and declared none will ever attempt to seek alimony
For where would I get the cash to purchase more and add to my cupboard stash

I want to complete them all and reach C2
Should take just about a decade, maybe a bit over two
But don't dare talk to me in French for crying out loud
I'm too busy doing courses in my office, i'm far too proud
I"m sorry who are you to say my methods stink
When I can recite slowly all these versions and associations of the word
'perturbation'...

It's a disturbance meaning disruption to people or a service,
upheavel, trouble, inconvenience, or mayhem, have you heard this?
It's also a disturbance of the weather, interference with telecommuncations or radio
Damn it I'm so good I really should be wearing a permanent halo
Oh no, what a mess!
You haven't got that word in your SRS!
auréole, nimbe, clarification: a halo of a saint
no no I'll beat this it won't get on top of me,
remember there's also the halo used in astronomy
those are both literal, don't forget the figurative, shit!
Let's drop all this and just read for a bit...

How many pages to catch the next person
I'm better than this challenge let's enter the 6 week one
It's more suited to me and I've got it easily won
But if I study too much it's not my fault
The leaderboard forced me to do it i'll show them, i'll bring it all to a halt
ahhh and now i'm zen
Balancing, perfectly liberated, like a chook in the wild out of it's pen
But, but, who can learn more words more efficient than I, how? it should be me!
Critizise them first, kindly ask for help, but make sure you use French radio and TV
Why don't you come up with a better way to use your deck of cards
and you need to exercise you're doing too much sitting get off your ass
Studying studying and studying while ignoring the world
It will give you credibility with the numbers you've demonstrated
If you make sure you mention how many cards you've created
Then get some advice on moving abroad but be sure not to take it
Consider the options on moving to France then explain that there's no chance
Peter Mollenburg have you lost your brain? have you forgot?
You've got a pile of courses over there and you need to get through the lot!
Monsieur le premier ministre je vous prie de voir que tu have sincrely utterly and
complètement lost the plot!

Congrats on the Fluenz 3! What is it being replaced by? And how is your attempt at French in Action going?

Thanks Jeffers :) I won't be adding any courses to current workload.

These are the current courses i'm using :

Assimil NFWE (lesson 102- very slow going, on hold for around a week)

FIA lesson 14 (on hold for about a month or more- will pick up where left off once the
less comprehensive courses in this list are out of the way)

Rocket French Premium Plus (finished all CDs except bonus vocab CDs currently working
on)

Rocket French Platinum (still solidly working through it)

Bien-dire Prononciation (very short and easy course but a lot of different vocab I
want to add to my SRS which will take some time)

TY Get Started in French (slowly working through, slow as adding words to SRS and too
many other courses at same time)

So no need to add any courses to replace Fluenz French 3
