I just opened a random page from the only pre-1996 German book I have: a random page of the scifi Solaris by Stanislaw Lem published in 1986. I see immediately: Am Fußende des Bettes saß... I have no idea why the FSI course used 'ss' and not ß. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yeah it's weird, I guess some writings are selective on whether or not they use it. Oh well, as long as it's still used in the German alphabet I'll use it wherever the rules allow. It's one of the many features that make German German. Plus who wouldn't want to write with characters that don't exist in their native language?

Pimsleur IV - Heute Morgen habe ich einen Spaziergang gemacht und habe zu Lektion 2 gehört. Hugo - Kein Hugo Assimil - Ich habe gerade Lektion 58 abgeschlossen und habe Lektion 8 übersetzt. DW - Ich habe den Deutsche Welle Kurs (Interaktiv) angefangen. Ich habe A2.1 Lektion 11 fast abgeschlossen. Ich mag er, jedoch manchmal frage ich mich, wenn ich mache zu viele verschiedene Programme. I live out in the country so there aren't many people around. Plus I get up to do my walks at 6am so that just adds to the seclusion since not many other people are out.

Haven't posted in a couple of days; my studying was a little slow but I still got some stuff done.
DEUTSCH Pimsleur IV - I finished lesson (I believe) 5 this morning. Purchasing level IV was definitely worth it; I've already gained a bit in the 5 lessons I've done and I have 25 more to go. Hugo - No Hugo Assimil - I finished lesson 59 earlier and translated lesson 10. Lesson 59 was a bit tough at first but I got through it fine. Penguin Parallel Text 1 - I forgot that I ordered this last week and it came today. I read a few pages so far and I really like it. I hope it doesn't get too difficult too quickly; when I have to constantly refer to the English part or dictionary it really disrupts my reading flow. DW Interaktiv - I did Teil 1 of Lektion 12 (A2.1) before. This is a really good addition. I don't stress about using it too much (I use it maybe every other day) but I usually get quite a bit out of it when I do, and it has a focus on modern German culture. EDIT: (forgot to add) I had my live lesson yesterday and it went very well. I learned some German idioms. My general conversational skills are definitely getting better. When we talk, she generally forgives my small grammatical errors (proper declension, which I don't think about much when speaking, and prepositional usage) in order to let me keep my words flowing but I'm going to ask her point these out more since I really think they are my weak points. ============================================================ ======================== NORSK (dabbling) I've had an interest in Norwegian for a while and I got my hands on some listening materials so I decided to try it out earlier today and it's definitely an interesting language. I know it's not really spoken outside of Norway and, even if I go there (which I definitely plan on in the future), the vast majority speak English anyway, but I still think it would be cool to have a handle on this language. I'm just dabbling with it now. If I continue and find I really enjoy it then I'll pursue it much deeper. A plus: Assimil has a German based Norwegian edition so (when my German is good enough) it'll be like practicing German while learning Norwegian. I don't know if that'll make it harder, since (I've heard that) Norwegian is grammatically very similar to English, so it might be better to study it from an English standpoint rather than through German. We'll see. ============================================================ ============= 2014 SUPER CHALLENGE I did some reading in the Penguin book and watched an episode of Küstenwache auf ZDF. I wasn't as quick with the listening while watching the show, but I understood a little. This will be my last post for a week, ich gehe in Urlaub.
DEUTSCH Pimsleur IV - No Pimsleur today Hugo - Still on the backburner Assimil - Finished lesson 60 today and translated lesson 11. I felt very good about this one, I understood the basic gist of it on the first listen. I went over the adjective declensions for Der and Ein words and when by themselves. I covered this a few times a while ago but it never really stuck and it is essential that I completely internalize these. ============================================================ ============= NORSK (dabbling) I listen to lesson 2 and as weird as this language is, it seems to be growing on me, there's something really unique about it. I really have to learn the alphabet since it is hard to tell how to pronounce some of the words/phrases just from listening. I figure if I can get some reading done I'll be in good shape. The car ride is 10+ hours and I told my fiance that I'll be listening to German Pimsleur at some point, which should be funny because she can't stand the sound of German haha.
