... and then I have discovered that I completely have forgotten to write my monthly summary, so now you'll get February halfway through March.

I have been watching the excellent program "The Nortwest passage" at Raiuno, - after the demise of Quark easily the best thing on that channel. This time the themes were Emperor Augustus and the Palatine, the big earthquake of Lisboa, spices from Tamil Nadu and the encredibly well preserved Caucasian mummies from Xiao-e near Loulan in the Western outskirts of China.

And right now I'm watching Mythbusters, who are trying to prove that you actually can polish poo. My next task will be to produce the missing summary for February.

OK, vamos a ver..

While watching TV I have primarily spent my time on Irish. First I tried to read a text about the Andromeda nebula ("An Realtra Andraméide") using a bilingual text made with the assistance of Google Translatre. But frankly this translation is among the worst I have seen for a European language, - lots of words that aren't translated and many translation errors which even I can see. This probably reflects the scarcity of bilingual texts available for analysis. So I decided instead to opt for something simpler: I have culled a lot of verbs from my old Teach Yourself (partly with example sentences), put them into a classical wordlists and finally I looked them up in my dictionary. And here I found short simple example sentences or expressions for most of them. So Irish has kept me occupied for more than three hours this evening. And it still amuses me to see how differently the sentences are constructed in Gaeilge.

I have seen a program about the rising CO2 level in the seas on Swedish TV. Apparently the content is rising rapidly for the first time in 40 mio. years, and this spells doom for animals with shells. Goodbye, coral reefs.

However when I started to write this contribution I was watching Spanish TV, with a program about immigrants in the Basque towns Bilbao and San Sebastian. Right now I watch another program about Spaniards in Cameroon.

Oh díos mio!!!! A mí me encanta el vasco país muho!!!!! Cuándo aprendo el español,
voy a españa, y aprendaré Euskera.

Also dann, jetzt auf Deutsch.
Man musst
Was

-------

My factual knowledge about Basque is mostly limited to the things I have read in the small book from Kauderwelsch. It seems to be a very interesting language which I would really like to learn, but I simply don't have time for such a project. So the logical conclusion is that I can just as well jump on the next plane down there -even if I postponed it several years I wouldn't be able to speak Basque at my arrival.

The TV program I mentioned in the Spanish passage above told about people who had immigrated to Spain and ended up in the Basque region. But apparently none of these persons had ever had the least intention of learning the local language. Spanish worked perfectly for them.

EDIT: I just wanted to check whether there were some reasonable grammars and dictionaries available, and now I have ordered one of each kind. Well, they may come in handy some day ...

http://www.sprachwelt.de/h/h0baq/index.htm
