Is it not the case that -issima is the superlative in Italian? For example generale means "general" and generalissimo is "the greatest general". I think Mussolini styled himself this way :p.
Actually, I'm not quite sure. It's possible the -issimo was a Spanish thing not Italian.

um, it's similar and it CAN mean most beautiful but it can also mean an upgrade from just bella which sometimes means nice so it more often means very beautiful. Nice catch though.
