as a second language of course. How fluent are you? I've never met someone (either on the
net or offline) who knows the language proficiently. Does anyone know someone in real
life who's fluent in Basque?

I had the pleasure of working in the same Department as Larry Trask who was one of the authorities on Basque. His wikipedia entry with links to some articles and his obituary can be found here.

Yes. I've worked closely with several Spanish colleagues now who are native speakers of Basque. It's a fascinating language, and from what I can gather, there are several dialects too.

An exceptional complicated one isn't it. And very old - I understand there is an expression for "ceiling" which means "roof of the cave.

Sort of on topic, does anyone have any videos of people with Basque as a first language speaking Spanish? I met some when I was on holiday, and I thought their Spanish accent was hilarious with the drawn out vowels on the ends of words. Wanted to show an example to a friend, but try as I might I can't find anything on YouTube!

Good one! I briefly considered asking the same question about Welsh but I do not know if I'm ready to wait two years for the answer. ;) Sjheiss, I hope you will find fellow learners, do not despair.

One of my best friends is a native Euskera speaker, and seeing him talking to other
people in Basque (Batua of course), is no doubt the most amazing thing i´ve seen live,
language-wise.
BTW: New Real Madrid player Asier Illaramendi is a native Basque speaker, you can see him
speaking easily in Youtube videos, and he struggles strongly with Spanish.
