Yes, isn't that great? - Or when you learn something, and keep noticing it elsewhere afterwards.

As for spotting mistakes... is it just that "le temperature" should be "la temperature"?

Ah - I didn't think of checking the gender! - I'd thought it was that "temperature" is typically used in a medical
context (e.g. with a fever), or when actually measuring the temperature of something...?

Thanks, Arekkusu! I thought they might be onion rings, but was thrown off by the earlier
mention of onions.
As for the Anglophone's mistakes...
J'ai view -> j'ai vu
en dedans -> au dedans (?)
Is "j'ai dit à moi-même" a literal translation from English? what would be a better way to phrase it?
vestibioule -> le vestibule (same spelling as the English word)
belle view -> la vue
le temperature -> le temps, la metéo; or else "il fait plus froid.."
- How did I do? Which ones did I miss?
|

|
J'ai dit à moi-même should be: je me suis dit
en dedans is not wrong per se, just not very natural sounding (also because we'd say "en d'dans" and it looks
like he's pronouncing the extra e). He seems to mean "in the car" -- dans le char.
"Le température" should be feminine -- yes, le temps or la météo is standard French, but we sometimes say
la température for the weather (ie. On a d'la belle température c't'été).
Lastly, it should be "reveniez" -- he missed the subjunctive, a very common mistake as you no doubt know...

Nice map, Emk - and thanks for the mention! Also don't forget Microsnout's recommendation
(post 5) of Librairie Marché du Livre, and Lecavaleur's
note on l'Allée des bouquinistes (post 16), both in this
thread.
- And have a splendid trip!

I also had a French couple as Couchsurfing guests for three and a half days. They were perfectly fine as
guests, but unfortunately not quite the conversational windfall I'd hoped for, as the husband preferred to
speak in English (so he could get his English practice). His wife was more comfortable in French than
English, so I had a bit more listening practice with her, though she did speak with a bit of her native (Russian)
accent. We ended up with him speaking mostly English (and translating at times when his wife couldn't
understand) and me speaking mostly French.
But I'm continuing to find opportunities to speak it at work, as my colleagues at the circulation and
reference desks refer Francophone patrons to me. Did a short session showing a patron how to search our
online magazine and newpaper databases. The real challenge, and my longer-term goal, is to get my
French up to a level where I can do reader's advisory en français - that is, give reading suggestions,
including summaries of the theme/subjects, a bit about the writing style, and why I think it may appeal to
them. I've started reading the comments fields in Amazon.fr and Amazon.ca, and will also be mining Sens
Critique link (thanks to Emk for the recommendation), for
appropriate vocab, phrasings, etc. Plus, of course, just out of interest in seeing other readers'
responses to books which I myself have read.
