Hi! I'm just peeking here. I wish you the best with your languages. And wow! I don't know what is your level in Spanish but Game of Thrones sounds such a difficult series to read for a beginner. I read the first two books and a half of the third years ago (Then I decided I had read enough epic fantasy for all my life and threw it away, although I liked those books, he, he. It was just that I read too fantasy books).
Nonetheless, when I started learning English some months ago, I chose a book I had bought years ago and never read: "Polgara the sorceress", a 750 pages epic fantasy story :P. It was difficult at first, but it's a good way to learn. Incidentally, I had a school base. The Lord of Rings in French sounds equally difficult. Anyway, good luck! Rowling - Harry Potter und der Gefangene von Askaban - read 3 chapters French Stephen King - Simetierre (cimetière) - finished J.R.R. Tolkien - Le Seigneur des Anneaux, Livre 1 - read 1 chapter ---------- LOTR is going fine, my only enemy is the passé simple, mais ouais... Well I get the mainline of the story, but not like every tiny little detail, but yeah i'ts LOTR, and I'm reading it, in FRENCH! But for some reason I'm in such a "Harry-Potter-Vibe" that I had to continue, so now I'm reading both books, at the same time, well not really, but you catch my drift. ---- And meanwhile I've watched 4 seasons and 2 chapters of pékin expess (French) . And I watch the Olympic Games 50% Dutch, 50% German to avoid boring sports and commercials. That's the bless of being multilingual I suppose. ----- Does anybody btw have a source for English Idioms and stuff, because I know some expression, but I'm not always quiet sure what they mean, so I'm kinda reluctant to use them. Idioms: I think there are quite a few out there. This one found at random seems
reasonable: http://www.idiomsite.com/ I'd prefer "A fool and his money are soon parted. ... Some idioms in general (not that site particularly) are common to British and American English and we also have some that are commonly only known on one side or another. Actually, looking at that list, I see quite a few that have an American flavour, and for example, we say "touch(ing) wood", rather than "knock on wood". We say (or used to) "If the cap fits, wear it...". Americans say "...if the shoe fits, wear it...". "Like a chicken with its head cut off: " - I'd say "like a headless chicken". We don't say "liquor someone up:" but we might say "get someone pi**ed" (= drunk in British, but it means "annoyed" in American). I'd say "method in my madness" "Pick up your ears:" may be a typo. I'd say "prick up your ears". It sounds a bit rude nowadays but wouldn't have done once. British people don't usually talk about rainchecks, and I've never really been sure how to use this expression, not that I would! There is also "fish or cut bait" and it's ruder equivalent "s*** or get off the pot", which both sound a bit American to me. And this is more of a joke, but it makes me smile: "wine me, dine me, sixty-nine me..." :-) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I've also started to read the English version of LOTR.
So what I do now is: I read a chapter in French first and then a second time but in English. I do understand the French sufficiently, I get the gist, the main frame so to say, of the story. But I verify my understand with the English, and I just like the book so I want to understand every lil' detail :). Any tips on this ? 1 person has voted this message useful |
