There is a web site called TheyShootPicturesDontThey that uses all of the other polls and lists that they can find as votes to create a meta-poll that approximates "consensus of informed opinions" (or tries to do so) for a Top 1000 worldwide films. Their summary fact page lists countries, not languages, and says that 159 of the films are either French films or French co-productions (some of which are not in French). Of course, that wouldn't count French language films produced elsewhere; that's probably not a large number on that list, but there are at least one or two such films from Canada.

I finally finished the French film list. Here's the link:
French film list (excel)
The list is sorted by score and then by year. You can use the filters to sort it by anything you want. The first column is my tally of films I've seen, and column J are my own votes for films I like, so you might want to change those columns for yourself. Sheet 2 is the list of sources.
Enjoy!

What an epic sheet!
I've been having fun playing with it this morning, and merging my list into it. I've
seen all or part of 69 films. I liked 42, hated or was bored by 16 (including three
Truffaut, two Godard, two Louis Malle, and two Jacques Audiard - all the critics'
favorites), and was neutral on the rest.
(We also had 13 films in common, but the only three we both marked 'like' were Le
Havre, Le dîner de cons, and À bout de souffle.)
And twelve of my favorites from the last couple years didn't make any of the top
lists ---
Incendies (Denis Villeneuve, 2010)
Carlos (Olivier Assayas, 2010)
Polisse (Maïwenn Le Besco, 2011)
Les adieux à la reine (Benoît Jacquot, 2012)
Dans la maison (François Ozon 2012)
Le chat du rabbin (Joan Sfarr, 2011)
L'enfant (Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne, 2005)
Le Grand Voyage (Ismaël Ferroukhi, 2004)
Le bonheur (Agnès Varda, 1965)
French Cancan (Jean Renoir, 1954)
Jeux interdits (René Clement, 1952)
Irma Vep (Olivier Assayas, 1996)

I'm glad you liked looking through it. Any chance you could list the 42 you liked? I've only heard of Polisse among the 13 "non-listed" films you liked. I'll keep an eye out for them.
Also, it might be fun to see which ones you've hated. So far, critically acclaimed films which I have hated are:
-Bleu (Trois Couleurs Trologie)
-Blanc (Trois Couleurs Trologie) (Dare I watch Rouge???)
-Le mépris (One critic wrote that this film tries the patience of the viewer)
-Jules et Jim
-Belle de Jour

Carlos is another one to watch for - it's an amazing biopic of Carlos the Jackal, and
was fully of 'holy shit' moments.
My full "like" list was, with my favorites up top:
Le Havre
Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque)
Belleville rendez-vous (Les Triplettes De Belleville)
8 Femmes
L'auberge espagnole
Les roseaux sauvages
Le chagrin et la pitié
Plein soleil
Ascenseur pour l'échafaud
Le dîner de cons
Un chant d'amour (adult - graphic)
********
The Artist
Potiche
Ma vie en rose
Chacun cherche son chat
La haine
La Reine Margot
La femme Nikita
Nuit et brouillard
Orphée
Sans toit ni loi
Diva
La cage aux folles
Z
Les demoiselles de Rochefort
Le samouraï
Au hazard Balthazar
Bataille d'Alger
Cléo de 5 à 7
The Artist
À bout de souffle
Les Cousins
Le Beau Serge
Les Diaboliques
La Belle et la Bête
Les Enfants du Paradis
La Règle du jeu
La Grande Illusion
Pépé le Moko
La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc
-----------------------
And my critically-acclaimed dislike list is ...
too violent/macho for my tastes:
Un prophète - Jacques Audiard
De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté - Jacques Audliard
too cliched:
La graine et le mulet - Abdel Kechiche
not engaging at all:
Bleu (Trois Couleurs Trologie) - Krzysztof Kieslowski
Au revoir, les enfants - Louis Malle
Coup de torchon - Bertrand Tavernier
Le dernier métro - François Truffaut
La nuit américaine - François Truffaut
Les parapluies de Cherbourg - Jacques Demy
Felt dated:
Les vacances de M. Hulot (Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot) - Jacques Tati
L'armée des ombres - Jean-Pierre Melville
Just stupid:
Zazie dans le métro - Louis Malle
Et Dieu... créa la femme - Roger Vadim
Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution - Jean-Luc Godard
How the f... is this on every best-of list?:
Jules et Jim - François Truffaut

@Jeffers: I don't think I noticed "Jeux Interdit" in the spreadsheet.
It's a lovely film I think. (Oh, I now see it's on Kanewai's list).
I think I agree about Jules et Jim.
I don't agree with some of Kanewai's dislike list.
I adore both La nuit américaine and Les parapluies de Cherbourg, and Jacques Tati can
do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
And of course "Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot" is "dated". That contributes to a lot of
its charm for me.

I watched it in a French course with a professor who was a pretty big film buff so we got
a lot of the symbolism and whatnot. So we learned what makes it so special to film
critics. But yeah, you might relate to this sketch by Les Guignols de l'info:
Le cinéma
français
