Yes, so I've now learned!
Of course we also have the word "Companion" in English, from the Latin noun "comes", meaning the same thing. Somehow I missed the association, perhaps because I wasn't looking for it (since it's usually not there to find in Finnish). Now I have my entertaining and otherwise unrelated mental image that has been rendered redundant by a more obvious cognate-based connection. Oh well! :p 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Um no. I mean the Scandinavian word might have had some influence by analogy, but it's short for kämppäkaveri. And kämppä comes from camp, originally meaning hut etc but colloquially just "home".
Makes me remember this place btw. I wonder if they deliberately named it "the lumberjack's hut" where both words have a different colloquial meaning nowadays :D I think we need a separate Finnish word of the day thread, btw. 1 person has voted this message useful |
