Thanks guys! Some of this stuff is really interesting, fun to listen too. I'll dive deeper into some of this stuff when I have more time, but in the meantime, keep 'em coming!

I like Lacrimosa. It is a rock, gothic, metal band with classical instruments as well.
I love the most songs Morgen Danach, Lichtgestalt and Alleine zu Zweit but there is much
more to choose from.
Van Canto are basically a vocal rock/metal band. Some of their texts are in English,
especially the remakes, but some are in German.
Not sure but you might like it.

I know it a two months old question, but I think you might already want to know something new...
Do you know Einstürzende Neubauten? They're not rock, or better, the first album, Kollaps, wasn't rock (even though it's a 'must listen' of German music), other albums, like "Tabula Rasa", are. Texts are in German, they're really comprehensible (such as Rammstein). Try them, especially the first album.
"Die Kassierer", it's a rock band, or a comic rock band, which is quite comprehensible. They made songs like "Drei Blaue Augen", that is about a beatiful girl with three blue eyes :)
Then there is Georg Kreisler: he's from the '50es, but try to listen to "Tauben vergiften im Park", it's really, really funny.
There are "Die Skeptiker" too.
Last, but not least, there are some songs of Nina Hagen. Most of them is in English, but some are in German.

I really like Jupiter Jones. Good songs, and it's fairly easy to make out what they're singing. Their website http://jupiter-jones.de/ plays their latest single automatically. But I prefer their older stuff such as Jupiter Jones - Das Jahr in dem ich schlief. Their new album has a new singer, and I prefer the original (pre 2014) singer, Nicholas Müller.

I don't like most of the artists the OP mentioned, so grain of salt: Die Nerven's latest
album is great.
